Rejuvenation Biotechnology Saturday Keynote by Diamandis on breakthroughs to Health Abundance #rejbio

SENS Research Foundation presenting the Rejuvenation Biotechnology Conference: Emerging Regenerative Medicine Solutions for the Diseases of Aging. This conference will bring together leaders from the Alzheimer’s, cardiovascular, cancer, and other age-related disease communities to discuss preventative and combinatorial strategies to address the diseases of old age.

Peter Diamandis will be talking about creating a culture of innovation and breakthroughs on the road to Health Abundance.

Dr. Peter H. Diamandis is an international pioneer in the fields of innovation, incentive competitions and commercial space. In the field of Innovation, Diamandis is Chairman and CEO of the X PRIZE Foundation, best known for its $10 million Ansari X PRIZE for private spaceflight. Today the X PRIZE leads the world in designing and operating large-scale global competitions to solve market failures. Diamandis is also the Co-Founder and Vice-Chairman of Human Longevity Inc. (HLI), a genomics and cell therapy-based diagnostic and therapeutic company focused on extending the healthy human lifespan. He is also the Co-Founder and Executive Chairman of Singularity University, a graduate-level Silicon Valley institution that studies exponentially growing technologies, their ability to transform industries and solve humanity’s grand challenges. In the field of commercial space, Diamandis is Co-Founder/Co-Chairman of Planetary Resources, a company designing spacecraft to enable the detection and mining of asteroids for precious materials. Diamandis is the New York Times Bestselling author of Abundance – The Future Is Better Than You Think. Abundance was #1 on Amazon and #2 on New York Times. He earned an undergraduate degree in Molecular Genetics and a graduate degree in Aerospace Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and received his M.D. from Harvard Medical School. Diamandis’ mission is to open the space frontier for humanity. His personal motto is: “The best way to predict the future is to create it yourself.”

Changing the mindset of towards big thinking.

Human development over 150,000+ years. This traps us in local and linear thinking. Things did not change generation to generation.
Now things are exponential, networked and global.

Humans biology is on a slow linear trend. Our technology is on an exponential trend.

Example of Kodak. Kodak developed the digital camera technology but did not push it forward. Kodak goes bankrupt in 2012.
Instagram has valuation of $1 billion with 13 employees in 2013.

A new type of company is emerging,
GM 1979, 840,000 workers, $11 billion in 2012 dollars.

Google is worth $400 billion and has 50,000 employees

Average stay in SP500 in 1920s is 67 years but today it is 15 years.

He describes Singularity University.

Teaching exponential technology and crowd and community tools.

Dematerialization (a different way to describe miniturization and integration and converting to software)
Demonetize (taking money out. Uber, Skype, airbnb, google, amazon, craigslist…)
Democretization (mobile phones to everyone on the planet)

Technologies riding Moore’s law
1. Infinite Computing
2. Sensor and Networks
3. Robotics
4. 3d Printing
5. Synthetic Biology
6. Digital Medicine
7. Nanomaterials
8. Artificial Intelligence

IBM Watson example,
two years ago. 2880 Power 7,
Now ported Watson to the Cloud.and loaded with medical and other domain knowledge
An example of “infinite computing”

Same access for a per”son with a smartphone in Africa as someone in Silicon Valley

Cameras in 2014 are one billion times better than the ones in 1976 (1000 resolution, 1000 lighter, 1000 cheaper)
But this is so today. What are they like in 10 years, 20 years, 30 years.

First commercial GPS 1981, 53 lbs, Cost $119000
2010, single chip, less than $5.

Soon we will be able to know anything you want, whenever you want.

Robotics – the robots are coming

Tesla Auto plan
Honda Asimo
Boston Dynamics (bought by Google end of 2013)
Google Self driving car

Shows a video of Google self driving car doing a slalom course at high speed.
The person screaming was Diamandis. The scream of a person meeting exponential technology.

3D Printing – a $10 trillion industry

We can print in 200 different materials now (living cells, metals, plastics etc…)
complexity and personalization come for free.

Genome Sequencing and Synthetic Biology

Human Longevity Inc with Craig Venter.

Goal – how do we add 30-40 years of healthy lifespan.

They are data driven company.

Human genome and phenotype data, microbiome, full body MRI, metabolomics, proteomics
that makes the premier human health database.

Cellgene is an investor and made their stem cell lines available.

Four Critical Insights

1. The only constant is change and the rate of change is increasing
2. you will disrupt your own company, products someone else will, standing still = death
3. competition is no longer the multinational overseas. It is the explosion
4. you cannot depend upon only the innovation in your company. Need to crowdsource in the right way.

Xprize discussed
10 billion media impressions worth 120 million
$100 million spent by 26 teams
$10 million prize, paid to the winner ten years ago in 2004

Originally 300 teams for the Qualcomm tricorder prize
Now the top ten teams
should have a winner in about 6 months

Global learning xprize starting soon
Make software work on any android tablet, make them literate in 18 months. (numerate, literate)
Will make the winner open source

Healthcare and life science xprizes
alzheimers, happiness, organogenesis [under development, purse not funded]

Diamandis looks for the user interface moment.
The mozilla/netscape browser. Look for user interface moment that makes it usable by a lot of people.
Massive growth potential needs to have a user interface moment.

Robotics needs to get easier to use. Baxter, but must be used in commerce.
People are making money. Many startups. regulatory change.

AI – look at Vicarious. A small number of people got [using a technical term] a shitload of money.

There is a line of credibility.
Below credibility – people don’t believe
Above – people think it could work

Supercredibility – where people will see that is great and I want to be involved.

How do you create rapid experimentation and iteration.
Need high fidelity, useful digital models. [thus the goal of human longevity inc]
