I have also heard of faulty mitochondria being implicated in cancer (one factor among others) since they seem to be responsible for initiating cell death when needed to prevent cancer).
I wonder if there are any projects seeking to find ways of inserting fresh mitochondria into cells in adult animal models. Maybe they could borrow some tricks from intracellular parasites to get them in.
