Video Players with 25 Times the Resolution of High Def Demonstrated

Red Camera has developed a wavelet compression that compresses video by 700 times or more.

The Red 400 original files were mastered as 16bit TIFFs (4096×2304), roughly 51MBs per frame. That’s an uncompressed data rate of 1.3GBs per second. Blu-Ray is 1440X1080 and has 1920×1080 as well. So the Red 400 is about 5-6 times gthe resolution of Blu-ray.

The Red 300 was mastered as 10bit DPX (4096×2048) at roughly 32MBs per frame or about 750MBs per second.

So the compression was to 10 Mbps or less and able to be transmitted over wifi.

Red Camera is revolutionizing the resolution of still cameras and video cameras. They are increasing the resolution and lowering the high cost of high end systems.

The Red One Video camera has been used by movie directors like

* Steven Soderbergh, the Oscar-winning director, borrowed two prototypes to shoot his Che Guevara biopics, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May, and later purchased three for his film The Informant.
* Peter Jackson, the Lord of the Rings himself, bought four.
* Director Doug Liman used a Red on Jumper.
* Peter Hyams used one on his upcoming Beyond a Reasonable Doubt

New high end modular video cameras are starting at $3750 for a complete camera with 3K resolution. This is over ten times the resolution of HDTV cameras with similar prices and over two times the resolution of 2K cameras with higher prices.

2K projectors can display 2.2 megapixels and 4K projectors can show 8.8 megapixels.
