The workshop precedes the Global Lunar Superconductor Applications Virtual Workshop, July 8-9, 2011, and the LSA 2012 workshops.
Recent discoveries by the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) and the LCROSS impactor have proven that the Lunar poles are a dynamic and exiting destination for exploration and discovery. They contain a rich variety of volatile ices and the dynamic dust and plasma processes that have created and modified them.
The Lunar Poles will be a crossroads of discovery and a gateway to the solar system and beyond in the coming decades as we unlock the secrets not only for Lunar science but for ice and dust processes throughout the solar system and even for planetary formation disks and molecular gas clouds before gravitational collapse has begun.
Unlocking these mysteries will first require developing a new realm of engineering “All Cold” designs that operate for long periods below 100 Kelvin. This will require new research, new funding, and new cross collaboration in four key areas of science and engineering :

* Low Temperature / Ultra Low Power Electronics
* CryoRobitic Rovers, Landers, and Laboratories
* Astrochemistry and Cryoscience at the Lunar Poles
The outcome will be very practical: a white paper and Research Roadmap to support advisory teams to the NASA “Technology-needs Inventory” underway at the Office of the Chief Technologist in 2011, funding proposal teams for NIAC, SBIR and other funding opportunities in 2011 and 2012, and the establishment of informal research groups for collaborative progress and presentations at other meetings such as: LPSC 42, Volatiles 2011, NLSI Forum, CEC/ ICMC, and EUCAS-ISEC-ICMC 2011 and other events in 2011 and 2012.
