The 152mm Koalitsiya-SV self-propelled gun, with its maximum firing range of up to 70 kilometers, is designed to eliminate enemy tactical nuclear weapon systems, artillery and mortar batteries, armored units and infantry, anti-tank weaponry, anti-aircraft and missile defense systems and command and control installations.
Due to its pneumatic loader and microwave shell priming system, the Koalitsiya-SV is capable of firing up to 16 shells per minute. The self-propelled gun’s ammunition capacity is 50-70 shells, including precision-guided munitions linked with the GLONASS system.
Uralvagonzavod engineers intend to outfit the Armata platform with a 152mm cannon to create a new heavy assault armored vehicle dubbed “the Tank Killer.”
The thermoelectrochemical weapon uses a special high-density material instead of the conventional gunpowder, which is detonated by an electric discharge. It is reported that projectile is accelerating in the gun barrel not only by the energy of the expanding gases, but also by an electromagnetic pulse. As a result, it is possible to increase the firing range by 50%, according to the newspaper “Izvestia”.
Serial production and delivery is set for 2016.
The 2S35 is expected to have a very high level of automation that will dramatically reduce the crew, to perhaps just the two people located in an armored capsule below the two front hull hatches.
