Tesla Autopilot is currently twice as safe as manual driving

Tesla CEO Elon Musk claims that about half of the approximately one million people globally who died in auto accidents last year would have been saved if the Tesla Autopilot was universally available.

There was one fatal crash on May 7, 2016 with a person using the Tesla autopilot.

Up until mid-May, 2016 Tesla reported about “~100 million miles” driven with Autopilot active. The figure includes Autosteer and/or Traffic -Aware Cruise Control – the Autopilot’s main convenience features.

Tesla is now gathering more data from autonomous miles driven in a day than Google’s program has logged since its inception in 2009.

The U.S. average fatal automobile fatality rate of 1.5 per 100 million vehicle-miles for 2000

Tesla is now at over 150 million vehicle-miles with the Tesla autopilot.
