Entering the era of Anti-aging medicine

Chris Patil gave an Ignite talk at the 20th Anniversary Summit of the Long Now Foundation. The talks were intended to convey the broad interests of the membership of this organization, which is devoted to long-term, planetary-level thinking.

He spoke about the coming era of anti-aging medicine, first giving some short background on the fundamental biology of aging and then talking about some of the challenges and opportunities presented by clinical progress in this field.

Metformin will be in human clinical trials for longevity in 2017. It has already been used to treat humans for diabetes.

Rapamycin is getting a far larger study in dogs and has shown effectiveness in extending the health and longevity of dogs.

Patil thinks that these and other drugs and treatments will extend human lives by decades for many people alive today.
