Undaunted by speederbike crashes at Battle of Endor, Dubai Police will use Russian Hoverbikes

Dubai police have announced they will soon have officers buzzing around the skies on Star Wars-style electric hoverbikes capable of speeds of up to 70 kilometres per hour.

The Hoversurf Scorpion was unveiled at the Gitex Technology Week conference.

The Russian-made craft can fly at a height of five metres and carry a police officer over congested traffic in emergency situations, First Sergeant Ali Ahmad Mohammad told Gulf News.

“The bike can also fly without a passenger and can go up to six kilometres,” he said.

“It can fly for 25 minutes and can carry up to 300kg of weight at a speed of 70kph.”

  1. The specs are awesome. There is OR missing however.
β€œIt can fly for 25 minutes OR carry up to 300kg of weight OR fly at a speed of 70kph.”

As for the 1st, I’m not so sure either

If these are 48″ props, then for hovering 300kg for 25 minutes this thing would consume 22kW/h or an equivalent of 90kg LiIon Battery (close to HALF of 60kWh Tesla model S capacity!)
Obviously, this isn’t 90kg battery pack under the guy.

Looks more like 5-10kWh. So, fully loaded it can HOVER somewhere in between 5.6 minutes to 11 minutes.

The other sentence is much closer to reality – “β€œThe bike can also fly without a passenger and can go up to six kilometres”. 6km / 60kmph = 0.1h = 6 minutes.

    Yikes! 5KWh battery pack confirmed!

  2. Seems to have lots of failure modes. Single engine out means you make a hard landing. Hard landing at speed with no wheels means you tumble.

Oh and new comments are truly awful.

    • Hard landing at speed with no wheels means you tumble.

Gonna be lots of unwatchable “caught on camera” footage with these. New ways to injure the meatbag.

Trying to see if this comment appears as a reply to yours Combi.

      • “Unwatchable”? You mean “Unmissable”.
Existing Russian dashcam videos are fantastic as it is. Add a 3rd dimension and huge spinning blades of death and they’ll be compulsive viewing.

  3. BTW is there some way to make the comments default to oldest first?
I prefer that to newest 1st, since comment often make reference to an older comment.
It is annoying to have to reset to oldest 1st every time I look at another post.

    • Yeah, it’s a decidedly lethal comment system…

So it’s really a kind of hoverscooter. (As well as a kitchen appliance)

So what kind of police force issues hoverscooters that can’t even catch a speeding hovercab?

… bonus points for adding “hoverscooter” and “hovercab” to browser dictionaries πŸ™‚

  4. what the heck is this new comment system
why did this have to happen
now i cant view the old comments on the old articles anymore, they are all POOF gone, unless i go to solidopinion manually and HOPE the – no wait i just did that and the COMMENTS ARE JUST GONE!
ALL I HAVE LEFT ARE MY OWN COMMENTS, ON MY OWN USER PAGE!
    THATS IT
WHAT THE HELL CAUSED THIS TO HAPPEN BRIAN!

  5. Typical Russian engineering: Guards are for wusses.

Notice that you could actually reach the blade with your foot if you took it off the stirrup. And they wouldn’t care, because it would be your own fault…

    • Goddamn it. Seriously dude? Guards would drop the speed from 13mph to 12mph and would drop decapacitation capacity down to zero.

    • Exactly – a ducted fan is more efficient than an unducted one, and also safer. I can see a lot of bad accidents happening with unducted/uncovered rotors.

  6. Hot damn! These high speed chases of jay walkers are going to be awesome!
Until the eventual dismemberment of somebody. But that’s going to be like standard operating procedure.
