Tesla will face many competitors developing electric semi-trucks and smaller delivery vehicles. Potential rivals include Bosch, Cummins, and Daimler. A number of companies such as Siemens have pilot programs already in place to test the viability of electrifying commercial trucks. And there are a few startups also pursuing the some variant of that electric trucking or delivery van goal, including Chanje, Nikola, and Wrightspeed.

Elon blew away my predictions not to mention your average industry prediction. 500 mile range and 30min to recharge 400miles… That megachargers must be like a 1000 kwh capacity. Also a new roaster with 0 to 60miles of 1.9 seconds, quarter mile of 8.9 seconds in basic configuration, all world records in history of car making. And all that with 600miles or a 1000km range… Gees is there anything this guy can not do? I think we can say buy buy to ICE trucking.
You know if Musk could just bore some big tunnels to fit these big rigs, that would leave the roads decongested for the rest of us.
Would be interesting to see a tieup between Tesla and Siemens, so a Tesla big rig can use Siemens eHighway overhead catenary. Patent quid-pro-quo perhaps?

Tesla certainly needs to branch out from passenger cars. If autonomous VTOL aircraft takes off (pun somewhat intended) nobody will be buying road-bound automobiles (even if electric and self-driving).
And yes, bureaucrats, nay-sayers and luddites will resist for a while, before giving in to overwhelming popular opinion when the efficiency, convenience and safety of aircraft is proven.
I disagree 90% of the traffic will stay on the ground.
No Tesla needs to work on improving their car manufacturing. They need to focus instead of branching out because when it comes to the mundane day to day activity of building cars they are badly behind.
Badly behind? I agree with the rest of your post, but not that part. Look at the initial roll-out of the Prius, of the Leaf, of any other electric car, and you will see they produce bigger numbers than any of them.
It’s just that they made big promises, and not meeting them, even if you’ve beaten any competitor, is what most people remember.
The model 3 is delayed because they can’t weld steel.
So yes their production is badly behind. Maybe it is badly behind their ridiculous promises but that is what they promised.
People have been predicting flying cars ever since we had cars and airplanes, but it still hasn’t happened. It’s just too expensive to make a car fly, and too difficult to make an airplane safe for driving (and crashing) on the roads. The result is a heavy airplane or an unsafe car that needs to be on 3 wheels to be categorized as a motorcycle and exempt from safety laws. No option is cheap, and no flying car will be mass-produced in the next 20 years.
Another option is a small cheap airplane that isn’t street-legal, but that means you don’t have home-to-office convenience, and again that will be a deal-breaker for almost everybody.
I’m not talking about car-airplane hybrids. Those are stupid (though they have actually existed for a long time). I’m talking about personal (or fleet-owned for mobility as a service) autonomous vehicles that are exclusively airborne.
