Elon Musk sleeping at the Gigafactory and directly in charge of Model 3 production

Tesla made just under 9,800 Model 3s from January through March. That’s four times what it made in the fourth quarter. But it’s still only a fraction of the 20,000 per month that CEO Elon Musk promised when Tesla first started making the car.

Elon Musk is sleeping on the factory floor of Tesla’s Gigafactory in Nevada, hoping to ensure Tesla hits its benchmark of 5,000 Model 3s per week by the end of June. Elon Musk has taken over responsibility for Model 3 production.

In the past seven days Tesla made 2,020 Model 3 cars, out of 8,180 total for 2018. For comparison, Telsa also produced 11,730 Model S cars and 10,070 Model X cars this spring, totaling almost 30,000 vehicles.

Tesla seems to be building 300 Model 3 Tesla’s per day but does not yet have a full week of production at that level according to Bloomberg tracking.
