Challenges: solvent cost – no details on the solvent. There is inevitable loss, and some solvent must be added. Expensive or difficult to handle or corrosive solvents can make things really complex. in situ – this doesn’t seem to offer a means of in-situ processing, and is therefore only valid for surface mining. While many Canadian tar sands are surface, most global deposits are buries and in-situ processing would be the only way of extracting oil unless you actually mined it. complexity – how much more complex is this process, and how much greater is the capital investment, compare to current extraction processes?
