  1. musk continues to push forward on automation. he has said that humans are under appreciated. Basically, our strength is our ability to change rather quickly. BUT, that was not saying that robotics are not going to take over. Musk is, like foxconn, working towards lights-out on the main line. There will be side lines where humans are much more efficient (seat covers comes to mind), but, the main lines and most of the sidelines will be automated. And no, BYD and others do not know how the cells are produced or batteries made. Hopefully, he will bring in the old tech to china.

  3. But then the Michigan GOP, along with the UAW, have worked hard to kill off tesla. So, I seriously doubt that he will want to do that, until both get rid of their corruption.

  5. pretty much. that is esp true on the battery tech, along with the robotics. he should have done europe first.

  7. Elon agrees to let China steal all his intellectual properties” might be a better way to phrase it.

  9. This seems to be what’s happening. Of course moving factories takes a long time. Note, it’s pretty obvious that this was going to happen so is he assuming that all the other countries will fold before this happens??? Note, as one country against all the others, we are essentially strengthening the trade ties between other countries and there are strong reasons to believe that our foreign trade will not recover when the tariffs are lifted.

  11. Trust me if they imported any of the Tesla cars (which they did) they did a tear down and already have the tech.

  13. I see where he wants to help Flint Michigan with it’s water problem… If he really wants to help them he should put a big factory there and help reverse the deindustrialization that is the root cause of most of Flint’s problem.

  15. As noted previously, this factory will be in the special economic zone, which allows majority foreign ownership, so there will still be a measure of management control to prevent putting the factory in a disadvantageous position. That won’t help with conventional industrial espionage via factory workers though. But seriously, Foxconn is gunning hard for lights-out automated factories that are reconfigurable, by integrated PLM with CADCAM and virtual factory simulation. The endgame being something akin to a seed factory. Is there really all that much to steal, with regards to factory automation and factory design? Even Musk admitted that humans are still better for some things still, and china has been running such hybrid robot/human factories where the primary labor is still robotic for a while now. Tesla vehicles have been torn down by BYD and others for competitive analysis already, so can’t really hide the tech.

  17. This won’t end well. They will help him build it then after their own people have the process down pat they will wedge tesla out of the market in china while their own brand takes over. Every damn time.

  19. In their continuing trade war with the US, China has ALWAYS charged a 25% import tariff on US made automobiles. And China denies incentive payments to electric cars not made in China. This is the result, US jobs leaving the US.

  21. It’s pretty clear that Tesla is not that great at manufacturing… so I’m thinking a good Chinese company can match or beat them at it. I’m also pretty sure there is no real magic going on in their cells… everybody has got of own set of tweaks to the battery chemistry who is to say Tesla’s is the best? However, according to published breakdown results, the proprietary electronics and packaging is probably what matters and that should be something that can be reverse engineered.

  23. Wrong. Jobs are coming back. And with tariffs on $200 BILLON of Chinese goods to kick in next month, even more will come back. The old world order where America spread its legs to the rest of the world is ending. China is hosed.

  24. Given how Musk has been outed as a Big Wig Donor to a GOP PAC, he’s definitely made all the right bribes on this side of the Pacific to do this.

  27. All depends on how fast Trump folds since it will take time to do this. But once it reaches a certain point there will be no stopping it.
