Russia and China building nuclear reactors to gain power in developing countries

Russia has been using nuclear power projects to gain economic influence around the world. Russia has 60% of recent global nuclear reactor sales. Russia is building or has contracts to build 35 reactors in 11 countries.

France’s Areva has not sold a reactor since 2007.

Russian nuclear reactors cost 20 percent to 50 percent less then nuclear reactors based on American or European companies. Russia then offers extra financial incentives.

Only China and South Korea are able to match Russian nuclear reactor pricing and terms.

China also will subsidize the costs for a reactor. China helped Pakistan with 85% of the cost for nuclear reactors. China will be trying to sell nuclear reactors as along with airports, rail projects, ports and factories as part of the Belt and Road Initiative.

  1. Yup. Difficult for corporations like WEC or GE to compete with nation states that foot the bill. It’s sad that USA can’t be a part of this – we are apart from this. It’s like progress despite US. Whine, whine, whine.

  3. Yeah, I don’t think I would want a Russian nuclear reactor in my neighborhood. Will they teach the locals how to run the plants or will they provide the management AND construction materials?
