Self-driving cars were expected to eliminate driving jobs but Uber just fired 100 self-driving operators

Self-driving cars were expected to eliminate millions of driving jobs over the next few years but Uber just fired 100 self-driving operators (reported by Quartz.com). The Uber self-driving operators can re-apply for jobs in Uber. In theory, they could apply as Uber drivers.

Uber is creating 55 mission specialist positions who will provide more information to self-driving car developers.

Uber also fired its CEO and founder Travis Kalanick in 2017.

Perhaps the main rule is that no jobs are not safe at Uber. It is like characters on Game of Thrones. No one is really safe.

Game of Thrones shows a world which is disfunctional, hard and inhumane.

Uber seems to have similar flaws and problems with execution.

  1. I’m puzzled. Why is there a “but” in that heading? Where is the contradiction between eliminating driving jobs, and firing drivers? The heading should have been, :Self-driving cars were expected to eliminate driving jobs and, just as predicted, Uber just fired 100 self-driving operators

  5. Heh – I guess I took 7 hours to compose that response? At least my browser says I posted it 7 hours ago, not 1 minute…

  6. I think it was considered ironic, that people needed to test self driving cars which are supposed to eventually cause lay-offs, got laid off. Perhaps also a bit of calling to question whether self-driving cars are going to ‘get real’. Though I always wondered why Uber was trying to make an SD car, risking bad publicity (which they got). Their most rational role would be to wait and buy fleets of reliable SD cars when they become available, avoiding yet another controversy and keeping their contract drivers from (correctly) seeing Uber as considering them as just an expense to be eliminated ASAP. It really seems more like this could be the first of a number of shake-outs of companies/organizations lacking the will and funding to see such projects through to success.
