SpaceX on track for BFR tests in first half of 2019

SpaceX appears to be on track to begin testing the SpaceX BFR and BFS starting in the first half of 2019.

SpaceX has installed a large rocket fuel tank at its Boca Chica, Texas launch facility.

Elon Musk has said – SpaceX will start BFR testing with a full-scale Ship doing short hops of a few hundred kilometers altitude and lateral distance. Those are fairly easy on the vehicle, as no heat shield is needed.

Elon also said – SpaceX wants to test the heat shield material… fly out, turn around, accelerate back real hard, and come in hot to test the heat shield.

  1. I don’t even fault the guy or Elon for going off. Both were in the right but also in the wrong. Musk and his people wanted to help. Instead of insulting Musk maybe the guy should have gotten together with him and talked about what it Would take and need to get through the tunnel.

  2. If a BFR demonstrator is flying next year before any SLS does, that would be something. But SpaceX’s twitting CEO should stay away from Twitter for a few days at least, after the last incident with the Thai boys rescuer.

  3. We’ll see. I’m cautiously optimistic here… That Musk has come as far as he has in the short time SpaceX has been going is rather incredible. I’m hoping he keeps going, and the BFR actually flies!
