Becoming an exponential winner – SU Summit 2018

Amin Toufani is an economist who discussed that there will be exponential winners and losers. He discusses what it takes for individuals and companies to be future winners.

Amin gave parts of the SU Summit 2018 at two other events. Amin has updated and expanded his thesis.

Absolute Poverty is going down but Relative poverty is going up.

Relative poverty is a problem. When people board a plane and have to walk past business class to economy then Air Rage incident went up 218%.

  1. I think the “everyone walks though first class” is a stupid thing. But not because of any possible air rage. Just because if I’ve got a nice, comfortable, spread out luxury space the last thing I want is a bunch of lower class oiks wandering through, bumping me in the head with their carry on cardboard-box-wrapped-in-tape and with their bonk-trophies getting their grubby finger prints on my video screen.

  3. Relative poverty is absolutely a problem.” No it isn’t. It is just an excuse for the Left to claim that the problem isn’t fixed and demogogue it.

  4. Relative poverty is absolutely a problem. When you are some trillionaire’s serf (and with a wide enough disparity in wealth and power you will be), it hardly matters if you have a ten room air-conditioned house with a garden and swimming pool, lots of nice clothes and vehicles, great food, free education, and a solid retirement plan. You are still chattel. Yet, until they get hungry, too many potential voters will do nothing about it (and then they will probably do the wrong thing). Adaptability Quotient refers to something I’ve been saying for thirty years. The truest measurement of the wealth of any nation or country is not in any tangible asset, such as its size, natural resources, tax base, or geography. The truest measurement of its wealth is in the willingness and the ability of its people to accept and adapt to change.

  5. It’s a strange system where you have coach and first class, with first class being 600% the price of coach. Given that the seats in coach are narrower than my shoulders I would (grudgingly) pay 20% more for a seat 20% wider. But 600% to get a seat that is not even twice as wide is ridiculous, even if it is upholstered in leather and comes with free drinks.

Given that the seats in coach are narrower than my shoulders I would (grudgingly) pay 20{22800fc54956079738b58e74e4dcd846757aa319aad70fcf90c97a58f3119a12} more for a seat 20{22800fc54956079738b58e74e4dcd846757aa319aad70fcf90c97a58f3119a12} wider. But 600{22800fc54956079738b58e74e4dcd846757aa319aad70fcf90c97a58f3119a12} to get a seat that is not even twice as wide is ridiculous even if it is upholstered in leather and comes with free drinks.

  9. First class costs 600% more for 20% more room. It seems to work that way for all sorts of products though. A Ferrari 488 GTO costs about 20 times more than a Toyota Camry, but would be very lucky to get a lap time more than 20% better. And there the Camry has the wider seat and they can both be optioned with leather. A full Tour de France eligible racing bike might cost $8000. But would be VERY lucky to use less than 80% as much effort to ride at the same speed as a $800 special from your local bike shop. (To be fair, you could get a $80 special from Kmart and that really would be a pile of garbage that would be dangerous to ride at TdeF speeds.) I doubt that an $8000 handbag from Hermes has ANY functional advantage over a good $30 option. (I have a LONG, technical, essay about the low quality rubbish I’ve seen fashion brands asking near 5 figures for, but that’s off topic.)

  10. I think that relative poverty is a problem for many people. But to say that both absolute poverty and relative poverty are problems that need to be addressed, is like saying that both AIDS and dandruff are diseases that afflict many people in the world today.
