NASA Astronauts will wear the lighter SpaceX and Boeing launch spacesuits in 2019

When NASA announced the astronaut crews for the first SpaceX and Boeing crewed launches in 2019, they showed them with the new SpaceX and Boeing spacesuits.

This seems to confirm that the new lighter spacesuits will be used when the astronauts are flying the new rockets and the crewed Dragon capsule.

The old, bulky spacesuits will be used for spacewalks.

The shuttle crews also did not worry the bulkiest suits for launch and entry. They used a 30 pound spacesuit.

A few of the advances in the Boeing spacesuit design:

* Lighter and more flexible through use of advanced materials and new joint patterns
* Helmet and visor incorporated into the suit instead of detachable
* Touchscreen-sensitive gloves
* Vents that allow astronauts to be cooler, but can still pressurize the suit immediately

The full suit, which includes an integrated shoe, weighs about 20 pounds with all its accessories – about 10 pounds lighter than the launch-and-entry suits worn by space shuttle astronauts.

Boeing revealed their Starliner spacesuit in 2017.

  1. RACIST ” Amade up word by Leon Trotsky in 1927, word was used to bowbeat all diddenters of the communist ideology, STILL used to this day in the west to shut down all nonconformists. this is a childs PUZZEL to find the INTENSIONALL missepped words.

  3. irregardless isn’t a real word. It was added to the dictionary buy less educated people using it so much. At best it is slang.

  7. NO MORE lying G-MEN in space no more politicians on a space mission, to hell with the selfies, self aggrandizement and self promotions the INSANE Political CORRECTNESS has KILLED nasa, we NEED REAL Pros THE VERY BEST irregardless of race, skin color or gender, in this time around or they WILL destroy the program for ANOTHER 30 stinking YEARS in LEO!!!

  8. The Starliner suits look only slightly more traditional than the SpaceX suits. Both look like they could be on the cover of some 1950s digest like “Astounding Science Fiction”.

The SpaceX suit seems to be more of a Flight Suit, not intended for EVA. Makes me wonder what BFR passengers will wear — will it be flight suits like this, or the more casual wear we see for ISS crew?

  9. This isn’t even amusing. At least tell us whatever bizarre conspiracy theory you are working with so we can have a laugh. These cryptic comments don’t even make sense to the rest of us.

  10. Yes, that is what it is for. This is in case the ship loses pressurization, or so you can transfer from ship to space station safely. It is NOT intended for working outside in space.
They are better called vacuum suits rather than space suits.
But the older suits they are comparing them too are ALSO vacuum suits.

  11. It seems more like a ‘safety suit’ than a true space suit, meaning something designed to keep pressure in an emergency situation, such as a pressure leak in the capsule, than a true space suit designed for the extremes of space (temperature, cosmic rays, high-speed space junk/particles/flakes, etc.).

  12. NO MORE LYING G-MEN in SPACE!!!!
Hire some REAL explorers or active pilots these crap desk jockys will SCREW it UP ON PURPOSE and LIE,
just like the last time 30 years ago.

  13. Admittedly, the SpaceX suit is cool but it looks more like a party costume or movie prop than the bulky, traditional internal activity suit we are use to see. But of course, it has to be completely vacuum worthy (just not for outside activities, requiring more protection from the Sun and self contained life support).

Starliner suits also looks nice if a little more traditional. Eager to see them launch.
