US Tariffs and Sanctions crushing Turkish Lira, Russian Ruble and other currencies

The Russian Ruble is at its weakest level in nearly two years with ruble touching 66.7099. The US will be applying new sanctions for Russia’s use of a chemical agent, Novichok, to poison former Russian spy Sergei Skripal in the UK.

The US is doubling tariffs to Turkey’s metals. This has caused the Turkish Lira to drop 15%.

The DXY US Dollar Currency Index is at a 52 week high at 96. The strongest dollar index readings were about 154 in 1984 and 112 in 2001. Having a strong dollar versus major currencies like the Euro and the Yen have more of an impact on the index.

  1. Depends what you mean by “collapse” Russia’s economy is now 1/20th that of the USA. Essentially, it is already “collapsed.

  3. Yeah, and Hillary was the apex of sophistication and grace? Obama was the pinnacle of intelligence? Substance and accomplishments are a hell of a lot more important than any supposed ‘elegance’ or ‘class’. I think that one of the things our political ‘elite’ are worried about, that we’re going to expect positive accomplishments going forward instead of sharp creases and eloquent promises that never come to pass.

  5. GDP PPP is the standard economists use to compare contries and they have been used it for ages. Your opinion is irrelevant

  7. You don’t compare countries with PPP unless you are interested in how many hamburgers people afford. The only time to look at PPP is to use PPP/capita to determine standard of living.

  9. Russia signed a treaty guaranteeing the borders of Ukraine. In return Ukraine gave away nuclear weapons and missiles. Maybe Russia would like to honor the treaty before they freeze or starve to death.

  15. Authorities in Russia said they were fearful of shortages when it came to basic food supplies, such as meat and cheese. The country could see a shortage of meat and dairy in 2016, according to a report released by Russian news agency Ria Novosti Wednesday, as a result of ongoing sanctions. https://staging-nextbigfuture.kinsta.com/2015/11/russia-faces-dropping-currency-reserves.html Do people remember in 2015 whn the US purt sanctions on Russia and Russia was deemed to collapse in a few months?

  17. Oh, and even if he did ‘make the Lira slide’, so what? That’s Turkey’s problem, not ours. Trump is President of the United States, not the World or Turkey or OcasioLand or whatever.

  19. I was just about to reply about that.:) Turkey has been mismanaging the Lira long before Trump made this tweet. Scroll up if interested to learn more about that. I posted more detailed response to this article in general.

  21. Hey man, I I think he’s relatively harmless, but very low class. I don’t like him making light of penalties being applied to a barely cooperative barely allied barely friendly regional power on Twitter. He shouldn’t make flip comments about policy decisions that cause a “currency to slide.” it’s profoundly retarded. Like slack-jawed hillbilly retarded.

  25. This has caused the Turkish Lira to drop 15%.” No. The Lira was already dropping/inflating because the Turks have been expanding their supply of base money into circulation by a lot. The answer to fix this is simple: Have the central Turkish bank sell foreign reserves for Lira and then remove that Lira from circulation. At least until the crisis has passed. But Erdogan doesn’t want the crisis the pass. Plus, his type of crowd always set themselves up to make it rich off of insider knowledge of a coming devaluation. But hey! W/o people doing research and posting articles like this out of ignorance, who cares right? BLAME TRUMP! For those how are serious about learning more about what I just wrote: newworldeconomics.com/turkeys-currency-failure-is-easy-to-fix/

  27. No sympathy for Erdogan. He once said that Democracy is like a train- when you reach your destination you get off. I’ve know some good, smart Turks. Sad that Erdogan has brought this on his country- he is not representative of many of his people.

  29. Trump’s tariffs are catching headlines but the more immediate cause behind today’s drop is the ECB announcing that it was reviewing the exposure of several European banks to the Turkish bond and FX market. BBVA, BNP Paribas, Santandar, etc. have all announced that they are reducing their exposure to Turkey. Why? Turkey’s Central bank is no longer independent. They should have hiked their interest rates several times in the last six months but instead they’ve bowed to Erdogan’s wishes. Turkey runs a very large external current account deficit and they have for a long time. They’re not a large enough country to borrow money denominated in their own currency on the global market. Now the bill has come due and suddenly it’s someone else’s fault that they’re struggling to pay. They can blame the U.S. and Trump all they want. At the end of the day the responsibility rests with Turkey.

  31. Very unprofessional communications emitted by POTUS (as usual). I never watched his show. I thought Türkiye basically sold fruit to Europe. I was unaware if my Chrysler Town and Country contained Turkish steel – it just might.
