1. Universe Today – How to Know Once and For All if the Universe Began With a Bang or a Bounce

According to the Big Bang cosmological model, our Universe began 13.8 billion years ago when all the matter and energy in the cosmos began expanding. This period of “cosmic inflation” is believed to be what accounts for the large-scale structure of the Universe and why space and the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) appear to be largely uniform in all directions.

However, to date, no evidence has been discovered that can definitely prove the cosmic inflation scenario or rule out alternative theories. But thanks to a new study by a team of astronomers from Harvard University and the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA), scientists may have a new means of testing one of the key parts of the Big Bang cosmological model.

This reduces the amount of payload that will be taken to space in the first version. It seems to reduce it from 150 tons to 100 tons.

  1. Sunspot Solar Observatory story has been updated. Was just a perp running around that the FBI wanted to nab. Was kinda concerned they might have discovered the sun is about to erupt or something and the gov’t was trying to keep it quiet until they can get the underground refuge cities built or some such.

  2. The article states that the CMB has been verified to have sufficient fluctuations to have provided a seeding scenario necessary for the formation of mass concentrations and galaxies. This is a commonly made assertion. It is true that the measurements can be interpreted in that manner. But the measurements themselves are more than a little suspect. Every one of them, without exception, falls within the margin of error of the instrument itself. When placed in context such as a satellite-based sensor — itself ensconced in multiple quantum fields — these measurements are as good as nothing at all. It remains entirely possible (nay, likely) they will eventually fall into the category of Wishful Thinking.

  5. Given that the Universe is just about the least efficient “engine” in existence, and that it appears to be expanding at an ever increasing rate, how is a bounce supposed to happen? Sounds like wishful thinking for those who don’t like the Big Bang for philosophical reasons rather than scientific.
