China will complete a $411 million diesel submarine for Thailand by 2023

China has started building a Type 039B (Yuan-class) diesel submarine for Thailand. They expect to deliver it by 2023.

It will displace 2,600 tonnes, and have a top speed of 18 knots and can stay submerged for up to 20 days. It will have latest acoustics and electronics technologies, and be able to carry 16 torpedoes and missiles, and up to 30 mines.

In 2017, Vietnam purchased six Kilo-class submarines from Russia and Myanmar is getting equipment from India.

Thailand has worked with the United States in the past. The Thailand government has strengthened its military links with China since a bloodless coup in 2014.

Thai Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha, a former army general, ordered 49 VT-4 tanks from China to replace its US-made M41s that have been in service since the second world war. The first 28 of the new vehicles were delivered in 2017 and the rest are expected to be handed over later this year.

China provides more value for less expensive military equipment.

Chinese arms sales across South and Southeast Asia grew from $386 million in 2008 to $1.5 billion in 2016 before falling to $948 million in 2017. Notwithstanding this growth, China lags other traditional arms exporters to the region. Since 2008, the US has exported $27.2 billion worth of conventional weapons across Asia (not including the Middle East).

  1. Containment of China by USA & allies since 1949, after the Chinese Civil War. So, nothing of advance technologies can be purchased by China till now. So, there is an old English saying, obtaining them “by hook or by crook’ and “if you cannot beat them, join them” in obtaining these advance technologies. The West have nothing to complain at all because the West taught China all these.

  3. True, we just kill attack the country directly, saves more time and gives the armed forces a reason to exist.

  7. What? Instigating a military coup in Thailand and having that puppet government buy their military equipment? That’s is so old school. US is passed that.

  9. China may not have backed the coup but its support is the reason its still in power. Seems like the military is giving up on democracy now as with much of the rest of South East Asia. Meanwhile in Africa military coups are all but a thing of the past.

  11. I live in Thailand and, even here, there was no hint of Chinese involvement–consistent with China’s non-interference policy.

  13. Sorry, but as the US withdraws itself from the international stage, you can’t blame China for stepping up to the game.
