George Church predicts genetic reading and writing will improve another 1000 to 1 million times

DNA Reading has improved 3 million fold and writing of DNA has improved a billion-fold from 1980 to today.

George Church predicts genetic reading and writing will improve another 1000 to 1 million times.

They eliminated one codon (out of 64) through a 4 million base pair organism. They are now eliminating 6 other codons. It has four uses. It is highly efficient with engineered amino acids. It is biocontained.

We have enhanced humans with physics, chemistry and technology.

Enhancing humans will be for intelligence, immunity and longevity.

  1. You are thinking to small. This isn’t about what you can do to humans. You can use this on ALL life. This will make creating microbes for industrial and medical use a lot easier (imagine producing all of the body fluids and medicines needed for a public medical emergency on site). The possibilities boggle the mind.

  3. Can’t come soon enough for me; I’m 60 now, but I’m skeptical experiments extending the lifespan of animals designed to live 3 years when well cared for (mice) can be extended to animals designed to live 90-100 years if well cared for (humans and most of us do not care for ourselves well enough to live past 90 now). I’ve been on Basis for 1/2 a year now and see no benefit. Maybe vitamins, fish oil etc. help but new studies say no. The dog studies will be more definitive. The chart showing augmented states is a bit silly. The first 2, then 5, 8, 9, 10, 11 put humans into Superman territory. So, THAT’S how the Kryptonians did it! Only the effects only show up on Earth, not Krypton. Never mind… I’ll settle for feeling like 50 instead of 60 at this point. The difference between 10 years accelerates the older you get. 70 vs. 60 will be even worse.

  6. Genetic enhancements can end up doing a lot for improving human condition, but they can only do whatever flesh can do. We will probably find out that flesh can do quite a lot. Like allowing you to live x2 or x3 the time you can expect to live today, maybe more, or regenerating lost limbs if enticed enough, or reabsorb organs and do big changes like gender reassignment without surgery. The future is one of full control and choice of individuals over their somatic expression. But yes, there is a lot of grey/black areas, specially concerning one person’s choices over their descendants. If it’s controversial to do improvements, it’s even more to impose disabilities or disadvantages only because you want to share something with them. And legislation is not a solution, because what one country refuses or outlaws, others will sell for profit.
