Canada federal election in 2019 could be a referendum on carbon tax

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is planning to create a carbon pricing plan for four of the provinces in Canada.

Ontario, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and New Brunswick do have carbon pricing plans. Those provinces have nearly half the population of Canada.

Trudeau leads the Liberal Party.

Polling in 2018 has been mixed. The Liberals have generally been holding the lead but the Conservative party is close.

The next federal election in Canada will be in 2019.

Canada’s Carbon Tax plan

The Canadian carbon tax would start at $10 per ton this year, bringing in about $2.3 billion Canadian ($1.8 billion in US dollars), and rise $10 per year to $50/ton in 2022, when it will bring in about C$5.6 billion (US$4.3 billion).

Of that revenue, about 90 percent will be directly rebated to citizens of the provinces, in the form of yearly “climate action incentive” payments. According to the government’s estimates, the average family will pay C$202 to C$403 annually, depending on the province and their level of consumption, and receive a rebate of C$248 to C$598.

British Columbia, Alberta, and Quebec already have carbon pricing systems in place that meet the federal government’s guidelines.

Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland and Labrador have worked out programs of their own that they will announce soon.

  1. Go Canada!! The United States needs to be isolated as the only major polluter in the world Along to be the only big terror state left! Luca Mazza (R)

  2. According to the government’s estimates, the average family will pay C$202 to C$403 annually, depending on the province and their level of consumption, and receive a rebate of C$248 to C$598. Love it, they have found a way of creating wealth (on average) for every Canadian (even after sucking off 10% (yea sure)) ! They should ramp it up by 10x to 100x and make everyone rich! #canadianmath

  3. This seems scattershot and unlikely to bring about any significant change (apart from maybe helping build a few more CANDU reactors). Now if Trudeau wanted to actually accomplish something then he would impose a carbon tax on imports from nations with greater carbon intensity than Canada but that would hurt China most so it won’t happen.

  4. If they try to apply that stupid Greentard tax to US imports, Trump better shut down all Canadian exports in response and declare Canada in bad faith of the new trade agreement.

  9. Oh wait this is where you settle for good intentions ” You misspelled “public relations” Because if you think China actually has good intentions w.r.t. greenhouse gases then…

  10. Yes! Make your domestically produced stuff more expensive so people go South of the border to buy things in the US and pay our sales tax!

  11. The United States needs to be isolated as the only major polluter in the world” You misspelled China. Oh wait this is where you settle for good intentions over actual *RESULTS* because US Carbon intensity is dropping like a rock despite a lack of government meddling.

  12. This is all just so backwards. If you want to reduce CO2 then design a Gen IV MSR that is cheaper than Coal/Gas.

  13. It gets around the standard conservative point that its just another tax on the little guy” Because as we all know, polluter companies won’t raise their prices and pass the tax through to the “little guys”.

  14. Again its a net tax on large polluters only, their payments in effect get transferred to the individual/ consumer.

  15. I can see how thats doesnt seem to make sense. Large polluters dont get a rebate making this a net transfer from polluters to individuals. It gets around the standard conservative point that its just another tax on the little guy -by becoming an individual rebate.

  23. I am OK with paying stuff more if it is made according to eco laws and I routinely key SUVs so that people who pollute the planet pay for their bad deeds

  24. Wrong again China pollutes less than half than the US PER CAPITA US carbon intensity is dropping but still 2x 3x the average european country So if we need to trim some population it has to be not in China but in the US Use your head, for once

  31. Yes it is. Has the power to impose duties (tariffs). This is why all trade agreements involving tariffs have to involve Congress. This is the main reason why we use Congressional-Executive Agreements in lieu of binding Treaties when it comes to trade deals. But Congress gave POTUS some administrative leeway in adjusting/applying tariffs as well. And that is what Trump uses and will use if Pelosi takes over the House. I believe that is what you were referring to?

  32. Wow! But of course you believe in that Blue Wave BS. It was ALWAYS BS, didn’t you know? Like two months ago, the Blue Wave included the Senate. Now the media outlets shilling for the Democrat party have dropped that.

  33. Hahahahah. No they don’t. Because the polluters simply raise their prices so that in the end the consumers spend their ‘transfer rebate’ money on higher prices.

  34. When China nukes Japan and you die, I am really going to miss you Matteo. You might want to think about moving back to Italy.

  35. I think using the tax to fund construction of a few CANDUs in provinces that currently burn a lot of fossil fuel for electricity would be the best thing to do. electricitymap(dot)org shows the carbon intensity of the electricity supply in regions where they can get the data. For Alberta you can see that over 8 GW is the current baseload, most of which is fossil generated, so that much nuclear would be good to build & the fossil resources of Alberta could be dedicated to liquid fuels for mobile applications (cars airplanes tractors etc.)
