Technological and Societal Innovation is key to beating poverty

Bill Gates the challenge of eliminating extreme poverty, which used to be defined as living on less than a $1.90 per day. The World Bank remains committed to achieving the goal of ending extreme poverty by 2030.

Innovation is the key to beating extreme poverty and societal poverty. Progress on agricultural productivity, infrastructure and other technology.

The share of the world’s population living in extreme poverty fell to 10 percent in 2015, but the pace of extreme poverty reduction has slowed.

Over 1.9 billion people, or 26.2 percent of the world’s population, were living on less than $3.20 per day in 2015. Close to 46 percent of the world’s population was living on less than $5.50 a day.

There has been great progress but current trends show that the world would still have about 500 million people in extreme poverty in 2050. This would be about 5% of the world population. About 80% would in Sub-sahran Africa. 40% would in Nigeria and Congo. Most of the extreme poor in Nigeria would be in northern Nigeria.

The World Bank notes that 45% of the world is still poor. Living on less than $3.20 per day reflects poverty lines in lower-middle-income countries, while $5.50 a day reflects standards in upper-middle-income countries.

  1. The flaw in this argument is that it assumes being part of the cash economy makes one richer in terms of real wealth of goods and services then if one was living off free land and shared resources, as most people have done throughout human history.

  2. If government is limited to policing violent, and property crimes, and enforcing contracts that do not have a arbitration clause, improving economic conditions are inevitable.

  3. Poverty can be beaten with these five factors: Law and Order, Equitable pay, Education, Healthcare, and Infrastructure.

  8. Bunch of bull.. We already ahve the technology to solve problems like poverty We need to care now about animals who are unnecessarily abused for humans This is the priority now There is way too much food in the world, take Americans and their fat buttocks They need to have less food not more

  11. 32. Due to the intentional choices of their leadership (in promulgating policies for their own aggrandizement that are contrary to the expert advice they have copious access to), some countries, particularly in the third world, will continue to exist in perpetual states of grinding poverty, disease, and starvation for large segments of their people (and some people in both those and other countries will continue to blame this primarily on the greed of those in countries that are better off). Compare Nogales, Arizona to Nogales, Mexico. It used to be one town until the US border was drawn through it. Ethnicity, culture, climate, etc. all has to be thrown out. It comes down to the differences between being ruled by people like the lovely Santa Ana and his successors, versus the Constitution of a democratic republic, which admittedly, is far from perfect, but way better all the same. It may not be possible to eliminate corruption, but it has to be kept below a certain level. Until a country can do this, you are just spinning your wheels trying to pull them out of it.

  12. I’m seriously considering the proposition that what you really need to increase standard of living is access to controllable energy. Consider the effects of the Industrial Revolution and the ‘Green Revolution’ of mechanized agriculture on their societies standards of living and hence the very structure of society. Whether it’s a mechanical reaper to speed harvest or a pump to provide water; you end up saving people time and personal energy meeting basic needs which they can invest in other areas of their lives, as they chose.

  13. The only societal innovation required is returning to the principles of minimalist government arrived at by the Enlightenment. Every “innovation” since has maximized poverty and when taken far enough every other misery, as with communism, socialism, fascism.

  22. I agree the main factor is access to energy. If the world would just focus on that simple metric the poverty would disappear. When the high-tech economies of the west are saturated with energy to the point that it is almost free, the undeveloped economies will find their way using the excesses. I think the simple thing to do is build solar farms, an economy could be built from the ground up to only consume energy during the day, I have no idea why we think we need so much electricity at night, to light our roads?

  24. Diseases are communicable as an exponential growth rate. Poor people who can’t afford healthcare are still quite capable of transmitting it to the general population. A pandemic can ruin your economy. AIDS and hepatitis can kill your labor force.

  28. As long as the land is monopolized and its value speculated in, there will be a lack of opportunity for many landless people, and they will be unable to find work or if they do, to become exploited through having to pay high rents, so as to remain poor. We badly need to justly share the advantages of land sites for all of the community, so that this corrupt way of land privatization through bad national government can cease. The solution of poverty is not its temporary relief by giving handouts, because this will subsequently show poor people that they can manage without taking the initiative and working for themselves. Good government should tax land values so that the monopolization and withholding of the use of and speculation in its value of valuable sites is no longer worthwhile. Then when the other taxes are reduced there will be greater prosperity due to the greater freedom to earn and enjoy ones income..

  30. Which is how the commons problem was actually addressed in real life. Sure, in theory anyone could graze as much cattle as they wanted on the commons. In actual practice you would very quickly find a delegation of the locals appearing out of the morning mist to explain that your 30 cows were overeating the grass intended for the village average of 6 cows each, and that as compensation you were donating your extra cattle to the local village feast that sunday.

  45. Are you saying the reason that Africa is poor because they don’t have any power?

You do realize that investors tried numerous times to build power plants and factories in Africa right?

You do realize that investors tried numerous times to bring tractors and modern farming equipment right?

    What happened?

The Africans dug up the power lines for copper, they stole the transformer oils and used them to fry chicken.

The farming equipment was stolen and then eventually died from disrepair

Vandals smash electrical transformers to steal viscous fluid that’s later sold as cooking oil for roadside stalls.
