Tesla has 2019 growth by leasing the model 3 and overseas sales

Romit Shah, Nomura Analyst, believes that Tesla will have sustainable profitability.

Tesla is near profitability or at profitability with the increased third quarter car production.
Romit feels that Tesla has a lot more improvement when they start leasing model 3s. Most people prefer to lease cars. They have not started shipping the model 2 overseas to Europe and China.

Tesla does not need to expand its factories until they expand to 500,000 cars per year.

Just increasing deliveries in the fourth quarter should allow them to comfortably reach 100,000 cars in the fourth quarter.

Tesla will be able to sustain sales volume as they add the $35,000 version of the model 3.

  1. You, like many, misunderstood what a Tesla car is. It is not a car with some computer and electric motor and batteries in. Tesla produce portable computers on wheels able to move people and stuff around. Arguing about the mechanical parts is like a arguing about the case and the cooling system of a Personal Computer. Kodak produced chemical cameras, they were wiped out by a phone manufacturer including cheap so-so cameras in their phones. People don’t always use or have cameras, but they always has and want phones with them. Nokia nailed the marginal users of Kodak and bye-bye.

  3. Elon and Tesla are from Silicon Valley: they believe in very fast iterations. Elon explained the real product is not the car but the factory. it is my suspicion the Gigafactory is designed and implemented to be very easy to reconfigure and tweak around. This should allow them to change very fast every step of the production line where problem are detected. This should explain why they had such “strange” mechanical components, apparently very inefficient and overly complex, sometimes too heavy, sometimes too pricey. I would bet the components today are some way different from 6 months ago. And in the next 6 months they will be some way different from today too.

  7. Tesla is making the best battery EV in the world right now in several categories, and battery EVs will be most cars sold in just ten years.

  9. No, nothing to do with moving the car is the same–maintenance is far lower on the electric–and brake pads are not different.

  11. Why are you pretending it matters if they are building anything in a “tent”? The Model 3 was a mess this time last year, now it is not. You lose.

  13. Good to hear. As an aside GM commercials tell me that they are consistently voted #1 in “initial car quality”. I’d wager a significant bet that they are nowhere near #1 in long term quality.

  15. Attractive lease rates are usually just a step before channel stuffing. Tesla can’t go down the channel stuffing route so I suppose that leasing is the way to go.

  17. Wake me up when Tesla isn’t building cars in a tent. I love Mr Musk to death but Tesla is a bit of a mess as a company. Not so coincidentally Mr Musk seems to be a bit of a mess lately.

  19. Its electric motors versus ICE + transmission. Most of the car is basically the same apart from the brakes where Tesla’s are much more complex and expensive to replace when something goes wrong.

  31. Great! Good to hear. The two they took apart and analyzed were probably not the best examples. Hopefully yours is indicative of the current state of manufacturing.

  34. They’ve been selling 10 years. Unsurprisingly, most of the higher mileage cars are the older ones. You have any more stupidity to share with us?

  37. What about all the oil changes, leaks, and all the ridiculous scheduled maintenance? Then there is the fuel. And having to take it very easy to save fuel. Having to wait in line to save a buck at Costco Gas. Electric you just plug in at night. What does that take? 20 seconds. And what does it cost to accelerate a little harder? When the ICE starts to get old you baby it and thank God that your transmission has not given out yet. And then there is safety. Teslas are very safe cars with crumple zones not filled with hot engines and such to ram into you and sear you until you are pulled out. Resell value, I think, will be quite high because penny pinches know how much they will save over other used vehicles, and there is the hit and miss of the condition with ICE. Not everyone drives easy and does all the scheduled maintenance. Tesla…you just look and see how much range it has, look at the upholstery and tires and you have everything you need to know. More certainty of condition should result in a higher price. Buy a BMW and drive it for 150,000 miles and you are lucky to get $5,000 for it. I bet you get at least half of what you paid back on a Tesla Model 3 at 150,000 miles…assuming you did not go crazy with the extras.

  40. And Teslas have commonly gone over 250k with only 15{22800fc54956079738b58e74e4dcd846757aa319aad70fcf90c97a58f3119a12} battery life loss.

  41. Most people prefer to lease cars.” Not true. Only 30%. The problem has not been in the selling, it has been in the manufacturing. They need to do a better job of making the cars to order. Trying to guess what people want is silly. I know the Mercedes truck factory in Germany is all trucks made to order where there are millions of combinations possible. Each is made specifically for the person who ordered it. And obviously they need to make more cars faster. If one tent line works, how about 3? From what was in the previous Tesla article, they need to do a better job training their workers, perhaps adding an aptitude test for the job. You want things put together right. Reworking the cars is no good. You need them right the first time.

  43. Luckily, most petrol cars will go 170K miles before engines or transmissions or major suspension components could be considered ‘substantially degraded’. Naivete with no limits.

  48. A battery electric car long leased and substantially degraded in battery capacity is still a car. A gasoline car needing an engine or transmission is a lawn ornament.
