China has 20 Megawatt Power System Modules and More Railgun Sea Trials

China’s is performing more sea trials of its navy ship with a railgun. They have also made progress on 20 Megawatt power modules to power more railguns.

China Shipbuilding Industry (CSIC) announced the successful certification of a new 20-megawatt steam turbo generator unit for ships.

The 20-megawatts of power is four times as much as China’s current generator units and equal to the most advanced generator units developed by the US and European countries.

Twenty megawatts is sufficient to propel 10,000-ton class vessels and larger vessels like aircraft carriers can use multiple generators to get the power they need.

The new steam turbo generator unit will not only provide electricity for a vessel’s propulsion system but also lay the foundation for a fully electric power system for ships.

CSIC is reportedly developing China’s third aircraft carrier, and experts expect it will be equipped with an electromagnetic catapult to launch aircraft. China is also reportedly looking to upgrade its most advanced 10,000-ton class destroyer the Type 055s with electromagnetic railguns.

  1. Uh, crossed wires here? There is talk of the railgun using 20W pulsed power supplies, and then there’s this 20MW steam turbogenerator talk. But most naval vessels are diesel or heavy fuel, only ones with steam boilers are specialist vessels or nuclear powered ships, but PLAN doesn’t currently have a nuclear surface warfare vessel (but is planning on nuclear carriers)

  2. That’s shaft power, China also has QC280s that generate 28MW each

This article is talking about electrical output.

  3. Just like all the American propaganda that thinks DDG1000 can fit 2 railguns without a reactor? Then again that was actual propaganda now that it can’t even fire convention shells.

    Learn some physics.

  4. The EMF field from a rail gun can be easily detected out at sea, from 100’s of miles away. And paints a huge bullseye on the ship carrying it. One shot in anger will bring literally dozens of high speed missiles down on the target before it can recharge.

HARBIN – China’s first domestically-developed 25 megawatt dual-fuel gas turbine generator for offshore platforms

  6. A GE LM2500 fits in a 40ft shipping container (or really close), not including electrical generator, and generates 25-35MW.

  7. Steam? There must be a mis-translation in there somewhere, since I don’t think China is +that+ far behind with gas turbines. CODAG is as good as it gets with mature technology.

Any possibility that China has pursued an alternate approach with external combustion?

  8. Whenever China makes something its propaganda but always end up the real thing. like it or not at theur own terms.

  9. Right, this gun on a non-nuclear reactor vessel??! Propaganda much? There’s a diesel stack on that freighter carrying a “rail” gun.
