Russia Is Behind Japan in Robots But Ahead in Robot Costumes

The most modern robot at a Russian Technology Conference was a person in a $3700 robot costume.

Robot Boris talked, danced and answered math equations.

One picture shows an exposed human neckline. Others showed the man actually playing the part of Boris with the helmet off.

I think Russia is 40 years behind Star Wars with Kenny Baker and Anthony Daniels. However, the Russian robot costume is better than the Mechagodzilla costume and some of the other Japanese man in robot suit costumes.

I do like Japan’s Ultraman series.

Realism was not a high priority in Japan’s man in robot suit movies.

There was Megazord from Power Rangers.

Kenny Baker as R2D2 in the 1970s

Anthony Daniel as C3PO

  1. I thought the post was pretty exemplary. The last photo of the Japanese bots he posted? lol its so epic!

  2. See.. this is really the core of why I love NextBigFuture. Articles like this that just end in one emboldened line “Japan Had MechaGodzilla and Many Other Men in Robot Suits” boom Brian Wang on the declarative note.. love it.

  3. I don’t know man. It’s probably pretty good for an engineer making $20,000/year. I just picked a couple random locations in Moscow suburbs on google maps and went to the street level.

Deny this looks like a nice place.

Cars look nice. Streets are clean. Maybe not the bogyman. Maybe just Europe.

  4. What happen to Next big future. It become a propaganda tool. You can find plenty of these robot costumes anywhere. Like Titan the Robot. I see only arrogance and lots of bias in this post.

  5. Ok but Ultraman wasn’t a robot, he was a giant space alien. After colliding with a jet fighter he felt bad and merged with the pilot to save his life.

  6. Russia is a sad shell of a country ruled by tyrants, cronies, and conspiracy theory. It has never been able to shed the culture of lies the Soviet Union needed to prop up communism. The sad part is, the country has smart people and tons of resources. Putin is pissing it all away for person power. Sad, very sad.

  7. They use the robot in their automated nuclear hyper-sonic cruise missile factory. No, really. Believe me! /LOL

  8. When Fukushima reactors went pop, the true state of affairs in Japanese robotics became clear to anyone: useless. Russia has robots for managing such situations, and they were offered to Japanese to help. They refused, because they are oh-so-advanced in robotics, but ended up importing iRobot’s equipment for such trivial jobs as taking radiation measurements around the plant.
