AI and Quantum Computers Are Changing Business and Consumer Products in 2019

IBM Chairman, President and CEO Ginni Rometty will give the CES 2019 Keynote on Tuesday by discussing how technologies such as AI and quantum, when built on a foundation of trust and transparency, will drastically change business and society for the better.

Nextbigfuture interviewed Dr. John Smith, Head of AI Tech, IBM Research to discuss what IBM has been able to do in AI Research in 2018 and the three predicted dominant AI trends that will start in 2019.

From Narrow AI to Broad AI to AGI

Dr John Smith, Head of IBM Research, sees AI progressing from Narrow AI to Broad AI to AGI (Artificial General Intelligence). This is pursuing advancing in three main ways
1. More fairness and accuracy
2. Providing explanations which can build trust in the answers
3. Robustness. This means not having right answers or completely wrong answers. Completely wrong answers is where the system does not get the answer and does not get the context. Building better models will allow systems to not provide an answer of ice cream when talking about naval engineering.

IBM See Three AI Trends

1. IBM believes AI will move from identifying correlations to causation.

I believe this means that they are able to increase the statistical certainty of the relationships but also generate virtual confirmation tests.

They would need to split the data into learning data sets and testing of causation data sets.

2. They will improve the trustability of AI. This means solving the explanation problems.

3. They see a growing role and importance for quantum computers with AI.

40X Growth in Ten Years for AI

Allied Market Research predicts will AI will go from $4 billion in 2016 to $169 billion in 2025.

AI will be a global surge in self-driving autos, image and speech recognition, and data analysis.

In 2019, dozens of companies led by Amazon.com (AMZN) and Google will drive the growth of AI-powered devices in homes.

At CES 2019, Samsung C-Lab will introduce the biggest number of projects it has ever unveiled in a single show since its CES debut in 2016.

Eight new C-Lab projects include: an in-video virtual ad service ‘Tisplay’, an ASMR sound recording solution ‘aiMo’, an instant video making service ‘MEDEO’, an AI news analysis service ‘PRISMIT’, a custom perfume making service ‘Perfume Blender’, an auto-adjusting monitor ‘Girin Monitor Stand’, an AI desk light ‘alight’, and a hearing assistant solution ‘SnailSound’.

Eight start-ups which have been spun off from Samsung C-Lab – MOPIC, LINKFLOW, lululab, WELT, Cooljamm company, MONIT, BLUEFEEL and analogue plus –will participate at CES 2019 to showcase their newly released commercial products and explore global business opportunities.

Three of these C-Lab spin-offs have been recognized as CES 2019 Innovation Awards winners. One notable example is the wearable camera FITT360 by LINKFLOW, which was given an award in the Digital Imaging category for two consecutive years. MOPIC and lululab also received awards in the Portable Media Players and Accessories, and Biotech categories

  1. Gave the cable company the boot this past month and bought a little box from Amazon called a Fire so I could still get TV over Playstation Vue, although, with Amazon, Hulu, Netflix, and a couple others, I didn’t really feel deprived. Even with an internet bandwidth upgrade, I still cut my costs to less than half. This new box runs my TV and it talks to me and takes voice commands for almost anything. We occasionally miscommunicate with each other but it feels like we are both learning and, truly, it is remarkable and will only get better.
