There will be around 100 million cars, light vehicles truck and buses sold in 2019, which will bring the total vehicles in use in the world to around 1.5 billion. SUVs are over one-third of the car sales. Here is the breakdown of cars and other vehicles sales with figures from 2017 and 2018.
Worldwide car registrations were slightly down in 2018 compared to 2017. This is information reported by Car sales in China down about 4% from 24.2 million in 2017 to 23.3 million in 2018. One-third of the 900,000 drop car sales in 2018 in China was due to a 16% drop in sales in December 2018. China is up 7 million from 2013.
Europe, the United States, and Japan had flat car sales from 2017 to 2018. India, Brazil, and Russia had solid growth.

Vehicles by Type
In 2017, SUVs were 34% of all cars sold, pickups were 6% and multi-purpose vehicles were 8.3% according to Carsalesbase.com.
Commercial Vehicles
The sales and registrations of all vehicles including trucks and commercial vehicles (buses) is a higher number. In 2017, all vehicles sales and registration was 96.8 million. Almost 50 million vehicles were sold in Asia. In 2017, there was 26.0 million commercial vehicles sold or registered in the world.
Heavy Trucks and Buses Sold in 2017
In 2017, there was 4.14 million heavy trucks sold or registered in the world. 2.26 million were sold in China and 516,000 were sold in Japan. 275000 heavy trucks were sold in Europe. 281,000 were sold in the USA and 167,000 were sold in Mexico. 3.29 million were solid in Asia. 283,000 were solid in India.
There were 316,000 buses sold in 2017. 254,000 were sold in Asia. 178,000 were sold in China and 42,400 were sold in India.
Total Vehicles in Use Will Be Nearly 1.5 Billion in 2019 and Trending to 2 Billion in 2030
In 2015, there was 1.28 billion vehicles in use worldwide. This is increasing by about 50 million per year. At the end of 2018, there were about 1.43 billion vehicles in use around the world and this will reach 1.48 billion at the end of 2019.
