The Human Impact of AI #EmTechDigital

Leaders in the field are looking beyond cutting-edge research to examine the impact that AI technologies are having in the world. Putting humans at the center of the discussion is critical to ensure that society will benefit from fair, unbiased tools.

Fei-Fei Li is the speaker.

Professor, Computer Science Department and Co-Director, Human-Centered AI Institute, Stanford University
Humanity: The New Frontier of Artificial Intelligence

Fei-Fei had an interview on emTech Digital stage. She talked about many topics about widening the pipeline for STEM and applying AI for medicine and to assist the aging population in many countries.

Fei-Fei states that AI has come of age and can make huge positive impacts on the world.

Fei-Fei Li is a professor in Stanford’s computer science department and co-director of Stanford’s upcoming Human-Centered AI Institute. She served as the director of Stanford’s AI Lab from 2013 to 2018. During her sabbatical from Stanford from January 2017 to September 2018, she was a VP at Google and served as chief scientist of AI/ML at Google Cloud. Li obtained her BA  in physics from Princeton in 1999 and her PhD in electrical engineering from Caltech in 2005. She joined Stanford in 2009 as an assistant professor. Her main research areas are in machine learning, deep learning, computer vision, and cognitive and computational neuroscience. Li is the inventor of ImageNet and the ImageNet Challenge, a critical large-scale dataset and benchmarking effort that has contributed to the latest developments in deep learning and AI. She is a recipient of the 2017 Athena Award for Academic Leadership and the 2016 IEEE PAMI Mark Everingham Award, among many others.

Stanford just opened the Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence, or HAI, which will work on topics such as how to ensure algorithms make fair decisions in government or finance, and what new regulations may be required on AI applications.
