AI: Two-way Recommendation Systems #TCRobotics

Artificial Intelligence: Minds, Economies and Systems that Learn
with Ken Goldberg (UC Berkeley) and
Michael Jordan (UC Berkeley)

AI and robots are being adopted by industry after industry, ushering in a new era in technology and services — but one that needs to be built as it grows. Berkeley’s Ken Goldberg and Michael Jordan discuss the advances that got us here and what comes next.

Michael sees a lot more opportunity in business model innovation combined with technology. He thinks a two-way recommendation system will enable great advances in music and other kinds of business. Top recommenders can be monetized and millions of jobs could be created at scale.

Michael says Facebook is fundamentally broken.

Ken and Michael are AI skeptics.

Ken is excited by robot dexterity. They created a company called ambidexitrous.ai. Ambidextrous software can be applied to almost any combination of bins, 3D sensors, robots, grippers, and suction tools without expertise in the physics of robot grasping.

Michael is working on deep learning meets microeconomics. He talks about people, data and preferences and economics together in a better way.

Here is a link to a presentation deck by Jordan. Artificial Intelligence: Perspectives and Challenges

Michael does not think we understand a single neuron completely and we will not understand or create true intelligent neuron networks.

Michael sees the other intelligence on earth as the economy. There are interactions that generate the correct inputs and outputs for participants in the economy.

Michael I. Jordan Interview: Clarity of Thought on AI

Ken thinks that we can use AI to enhance human capabilities.

Background

Michael I. Jordan is the Pehong Chen Distinguished Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and the Department of Statistics at the University of California, Berkeley. His research interests bridge the computational, statistical, cognitive and biological sciences.

Prof. Jordan is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and a member of the National Academy of Engineering. He has been named a Neyman Lecturer and a Medallion Lecturer by the Institute of Mathematical Statistics. He received the IJCAI Research Excellence Award in 2016, the David E. Rumelhart Prize in 2015 and the ACM/AAAI Allen Newell Award in 2009.

Ken Goldberg, Chief Scientist, Ambidextrous Robotics & Distinguished Chair, Engineering, University of California, Berkeley

Ken Goldberg is an artist, inventor, and roboticist. He is William S. Floyd Jr Distinguished Chair in Engineering at UC Berkeley and Chief Scientist at Ambidextrous Robotics. Ken is on the Editorial Board of the journal Science Robotics, served as Chair of the Industrial Engineering and Operations Research Department, and co-founded the IEEE Transactions on Automation Science and Engineering. Short documentary films he co-wrote were selected for Sundance and one was nominated for an Emmy Award. Ken and his students have published 300 peer-reviewed papers, 9 US patents, and created award-winning artworks featured in 70 exhibits worldwide.
