China Reveals Maglev Train That Nearly Doubles Speeds to 600 Kph (372 mph)

China has a prototype maglev train which can go nearly twice as fast as regular high-speed trains. China Railway Rolling Stock Corporation (CRRC) built the prototype will be capable of speeds of up to 600 km/h and will be completed in 2020 and will have heavy testing in 2021.

China has a maglev on a short line in Shanghai from the airport to Pudong. It has a top speed of 430 kilometers per hour (267 miles per hour). Regular high-speed rail in China operates at 250–350 km/h (155–217 mph).

Passenger planes have a cruising speed of about 900 km/h so maglev’s at 600 km/h would have the similar trip times out to 2000 miles after factoring in the longer times to board and exit planes. Airports tend to be outside of cities while high-speed rail terminals are usually near downtown areas.

High-speed maglev at 400 mph (650 kph) would be far closer to the planned speed of hyperloop technology. The fastest planned Hyperloop’s would be in the 900-1000 kph speed range.

A big difference for deployment is that China has state support for tens of thousands of miles of high-speed rail network. China already has committed the land for long and straight lines which can accommodate high-speed rail. China can put even higher speed maglev lines alongside the existing high-speed rail. They clearly have the ability to complete massive construction projects.

Japan has plans to operate 500 km/h maglev trains by 2027.

  1. 1. Put batteries and an electric engine in every wagon.
    2. Make a MONORAIL out of flat and silky smooth concrete.
    3. Create an electrostatic rollator field on the smooth, wide bottom of every wagon. This generates an antipathic electrostatic lagging field in the dielectric concrete.
    4. The wagon is also statically-electrostatically charged. This projects an ionized cloud around the wagon in an extremely aerodynamic shape.

  2. incredibly tight tolerance? not really, it would not require higher standard than 350kmph track. And you may know, it needs less maintenance.

  3. This is an amazing advancement in technology that the Chinese will utilize and the world can use. For the comments about coal and Soviet Unionish…it’s obvious there is still ignorance like Trump on who the Chinese are and what they use…coal and steel are dying industries, propping them up does not help their workers..retraining them for jobs of the future will….

  5. Consider this bit of irony. That super futuristic Chinese maglev train requires significant amounts of electrical power to operate. And that electrical power is likely generated by burning coal. So this 21st century train is powered by burning coal just like 19th century steam trains were.

  6. This is awesome. This development will make airplanes within the continent of China a thing of the past. It will also be much cheaper than the tunnels that Elon will bore. In fact it use the existing infrastructure, just the trains are different. What is with all the sour grapes?

  7. The Boring company illustrates everything that is wrong with modern American individualism. In China, they build for the masses, in America a wealthy industrialist like Elon Musk gets permission to build individual car tunnels to move a handful of rich people like himself, wasting resources and space that could be used for high speed trains or even utilities, on a “pipe dream.” This is why it will be the Chinese century, in spite of Trump’s teriffs.

  9. mag-lev trains are pretty awesome, I’d like to see some in the US, but with land being owned by its people, that’s very hard to accomplish. I’m hoping Elon’s Boring Company can help solve that problem.

  10. Interesting that this train does not run on steel rail tracks. One of the major drawbacks to bullet trains is that they need tracks with incredibly tight tolerances. In the real world, that means the tracks must be adjusted on a daily basis which runs into very large maintenance costs.
