Tesla Has Over 10 Billion Miles of Self-driving Car Data to Zero for Ford

Kevin Kelly compare how much self-driving car data that Tesla has compared to Ford. Tesla has over 10 billion miles of self-driving car data but Ford has Zero miles of self-driving car data.

  1. It’s because they are some rednecks that work on an assembly plant. Obviously they hate anything Tesla, that’s why they care about ‘spying’. C’mon guys you have more things to worry about rather than government surveillance, how about putting Junior through your terrible education system?

  2. Tesla has over 10 billion miles of self-driving car data

    That’s in the first paragraph.

  3. No I haven’t. How do you interpret this – “….how much self-driving car data that Tesla has compared to Ford…”? Self-driving is used in the header and in the text AND in Ming’s own twitter feed, where, by they way, there is a lively debate on the figures.

No sims? Al Prescott, Tesla general counsel said “Tesla conducts testing to develop autonomous vehicles via simulation, in laboratories, on test tracks, and on public roads in various locations around the world” (Dec31, 2018 to Cali DMV). Musk is a liar, or not listening to his lawyer.

And no, the “only way to improve performance” is NOT to feed it more data. Look up brownian motion in statistics. I can “feed” deep learning algos with trillions of data points about a car going around a test track. But it won’t be any smarter. It is the outlier, random, data that matters. And then you don’t need quantity.

  4. You have misread the article. Tesla never ever ever claimed 10 billion self driving miles. What they are claiming is that they have 10 billion miles of data to train the neural net computers in the car to improve its ability to reach level 5. The only way to improve the performance of the self driving AI is to feed it more data. BTW, at autonomy day recently Musk said they are doing all their training from real miles driven, not from test track or simulations.

  5. Dig up some obscure 5th level dictionary reference that illustrates that my (originally lazy) structure is an “approved” useage. Making another, real, spelling mistake in the process and by now completely forgetting the original subject.

  6. “Fact – Spacex will make Elon Musk the richest man in the world in 2 years.”

Fact: to become the world’s richest man in 2 years he would need to gain about $40 billion per year.

“Plus the Boring company is only going to make him richer.”

    Uhh.. how about lol no?

“He will probably buy tesla, and if he want he can pay enough to break all those tesla shorters.”

    Says the Tesla shareholder…

  7. There was no 10 billion self-driving miles. Fact. 2 years ago Tesla said they had 780 million miles (of something). This is false advertising. Of course many car companies do gazillions of miles through simulations and other sources. But to say 10 billion of self-driving miles is patently false.

  8. You really dont understand much. More real life miles = more edge cases and its all about that at this point.

  9. As I understand it, those miles matter much more to Tesla than Ford due to the chosen tech paths. Tesla tries to emulate the human perception of the world with cameras and a radar. Ford and others use lidar and makes an accurate 3D model of the world.

  10. And then point out an anal-retentive correction “a spelling” – a grammar, rather than a spelling, mistake.

  11. BS from Tesla. These aren’t real miles. The AV miles are based on test tracks and laboratory simulations. And the “real” miles are what they refer to as “shadow mode”, i.e., information of driving characteristics while you are driving – not on autonomous mode.
The obvious giveaway is the mileage. 10 billion miles is 25,000 miles driven for every Tesla ever made, and obviously every Tesla built isn’t being driven around “by itself”.

The number of miles driven is a useless figure. You can drive 24/7 around an oval race track and count them, or, you can count the 10 miles of heavy traffic in a blizzard in New York while navigating around roadworks. aka “complex miles”.

btw, from the Cali DMV “For Reporting Year 2018, Tesla did not test any vehicles on public roads in California in autonomous mode or operate any autonomous vehicles, as defined by California law.” So I guess not a surprise either that Ford had zero miles….

  12. What makes you think you have a right to privacy? It’s not in the constitution, it’s not in any of the amendments etc.

Only a criminal really should have a right to privacy because without privacy there is no anonymity for criminals to hide behind.

As for tesla spying on me, I am not crazy with conspiracy theories or paranoid with fears of the improbable.

And just why should I buy a Ford so that I can be seen (where I am going) from the space station or perhaps martians watching me drive around?

  13. Tesla spying on you (Where and when you drive, Where you stop, how long you stop, how many persons in the car, perhaps recording what you say or do in the car  ) and keep all that data forever. Ford respecting your right to Privacy.

    Buy Ford!

  14. From what I can tell, looking at the numbers and reading the major news articles that have nothing to gain by biasing the news, it is a sure thing. Spacex and starlink are private companies.

I think if there is a unknown in the equations it would be the Boring Company. Which is private also. But the above forecast is for only starlink.

The other thing I can tell based on his endeavors is that Elon Musk is trying his best to help the human race.

  15. Do we *know* that the satellite scheme will be that profitable? You talk as if it was a foregone conclusion…

  16. Are you crazy? Fact – Spacex will make Elon Musk the richest man in the world in 2 years. Plus the Boring company is only going to make him richer. He will probably buy tesla, and if he want he can pay enough to break all those tesla shorters.
I guess crazy would be betting against him.

  17. I predict Tesla will sell their data eventually. They are cash strapped and need revenues. Ford can buy data from others too. I’m bad at predictions too.
