The Tesla Shanghai Factory building is nearing construction completion as seen in several videos filmed of the site.
In March, Shanghai official Chen Mingbo stated that the initial buildout of the factory should be completed by May. Tesla may start Model 3 trial production as early as September.
The Tesla factory in China is critical for Tesla to recover share price and increase sales. The factory in China will be able to sell electric cars in China without a 15% tariff and other charges.
In April, Elon Musk indicated that he expects Tesla to be able to reach 2000 car per week production at the Shanghai factory by the end of 2019. In January, Elon talked about 3,000 Model 3 cars a week in Shanghai but without a specific date.
Full production will be 500,000 cars per year at the Shanghai Tesla factory. If Tesla can get close to that level in late 2020 or 2021, then the company would be solidly profitable and stable. China has an overall electric vehicle demand which would give Tesla the room to win large market share. Maxing the factory in China might also see a second China factory in 2021.
There were 110,000 electric vehicles sold in China in March 2019. Tesla sold 5300 Model 3’s in China in March.
Tesla sold 78% of the plug-in electric cars in the USA in March.

That Audi is all “Noooooooo!”
They had to go public to raise capital. Making cars isn’t like making iPhone apps- there are real costs to manufacturing physical things. Hundreds of millions of dollars in costs all of which are front loaded and must be paid in cash before you make your first vehicle.
There is a reason why there are so few new car companies.
Well that is one way to look at things.
It is and that is the problem. They need to focus on getting model 3 prices down, margins up, and profitability. They need Musk to not run a clown show (announce the closure of all retail locations, backtrack a day later when someone tells him it’ll cost hundreds of millions to do so).
Toyota and hybrids come to mind. Toyota/Honda and fuel cells (arguably). VW has four difrferent power trains across their vehicle lineup. Most car companies have multiple power trains. Gas, electric, hybrid, hydrogen, diesel.
Every time you take your car to the dealer and they update it to fix something.
Personally i’m and Acura kind of guy. The electric Audis tempt me.
China really wants to start stealing teslas IP and sharing with local companies
Those two things are often, but not necessarily related.
I own a Tesla.
I do not own Tesla stock.*
*I used to from 2012-2014
Couple of factories producing each 500k cars and their supply chain could rejuvenate Detroit for example. Creating new infrastructure, high value jobs, surrounding business clusters etc
Instead it all will be created in… China. Just Great.
China suppose to be a main a strategic opponent of USA. Its very patriotic to supply them with the most advanced automotive tech existing in USA.
“Elon Musk has done more to support this country than any single individual in the last”
Well Elon Musk does not exist in vacuum. He prospered because of American people. I doubt if he lived in Somali or Antarctica he would become reach and famous. On another hand I’m pretty sure If there wasn’t SpaceX, there would be SpaceY, If there is no Tesla, there would Vesla etc.
“Plus it is currently the best and safest car in the world bar none.”
Is it a sarcasm? Self combusting, self crashing car, which is spying on you?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uV2cwqdHuTA
You are right his big mistake with tesla was going public and thereby opening the door to government interference.
Elon Musk has done more to support this country than any single individual in the last 100 years.
Spacex
Starlink
Boring Company
Neural Link
PayPal
etc,
The only one that is not going well is the one the government oversees — Tesla
And in spite of the government interference it will soar because.
Maxwell technologies
China gigafactory
Europe Gigafactory
Plus it is currently the best and safest car in the world bar none.
The Tesla story does not reflect well on Elon. He is trying to fix something that has always been broken and could never be any other way.
Yes. Thank you. Spitting, not sitting.
You may be right in all. But they are not hitting the growth expectation and the stock is responding. Price? Public readiness for this technology?
It appears, that Musk at all do not have any allegiance to their country, they will sell anything: technology , trade secrets, people organs, whatever.
Free market rulez.
I know your not stupid, so please rephrase that in english for us stupid people 🙂
I am by no means rich, I use my social security money. As far as stupid, I am that 🙂 But I don’t invest any more than I could lose and not miss it.
Are you saving your money for retirement?
I am buying more tesla stock as soon as my social security check comes, the lower it goes the cheaper I can buy it for 🙂 To many people are looking at tesla like its a normal car company. It’s not. When was the last time a car company started putting in a whole new drive train because its more efficient?
Tesla just changed motors on a lot of their cars almost overnight because they are more efficient.
In modern cars there is a lot of computers and electronics. When was the last time they came out with a software update, let alone a free one?
Tesla’s are one of the safest cars in the world and they are striving to make it safer.
R. Kimhi you were quick to reply but since you are not a liar I would bet you a nickel you have not driven a tesla.
Only someone that never drove Tesla would say that…
200 shares…that means your either rich, or stupid.
So are we also supposed to buy stocks and help you recover your losses?
I don’t see that it is spitting cars yet so no need to bother with that.
I currently own 200 shares of tesla. First I will say according to the stats and the majority of people that own a tesla, it’s the best car made in pretty much all ways.
Plus once it really gets going by 2020, the stock will soar in value.
