Many Coronavirus Clinical Trials in China

There is reports of 77 different Coronavirus clinical trial applications filed have been China. Other sources talking about 19 clinical trials registered in China. Two weeks ago there were an estimated 30 anti-coronavirus therapies in the pipeline.

Researchers in China are launching more systematic tests of these repurposed medicines. Since January 28, scientists have registered 19 clinical trials in China, and at least a few have already begun dosing patients. With initial results expected as early as April.

Companies such as Inovio Pharmaceuticals, Moderna, and Novavax have been reported to be developing coronavirus vaccines. Two weeks ago there were a total of 30 anti-coronavirus therapies there were to be tested.

Clinical-stage biotech company GeoVax signed a letter of intent with BravoVax, a vaccine developer based in Wuhan, China, to jointly develop a coronavirus vaccine using genetic sequences of the 2019-nCoV.

Clover Biopharmaceuticals is developing a recombinant subunit vaccine using its patented Trimer-Tag© technology. The company is developing the vaccine based on the trimeric S protein (S-Trimer) of the 2019-nCoV virus, which is responsible for binding with the host cell and causing a viral infection.

Using Trimer-Tag© technology, Clover successfully produced the subunit vaccine in a mammalian cell-culture based expression system on 10 February. The company also identified antigen-specific antibody in the serum of fully recovered patients who were previously infected by the virus.

NanoViricides, a clinical-stage company, is working on developing a treatment for nCoV-2019 using its nanoviricide® technology. The company’s technology is used to develop ligands that can bind to the virus in the same way as a cognate receptor and attack various points of the virus.

Vir Biotechnology, a clinical-stage immunology company, announced on 12 February that it has identified two monoclonal antibodies that can bind to the virus that causes COVID-19. The antibodies target the spike (S) protein of the virus by entering through the cellular receptor ACE2.

Two trials began recruiting patients last week. They will test the efficacy of remdesivir, an experimental antiviral produced by American drugmaker Gilead. It works by blocking the enzyme that many viruses use to replicate inside human cells.

Dr. Marie-Paule Kieny, a former WHO virologist, co-chaired a two-day, closed-door research forum in Geneva of more than 300 scientists and researchers, including some who took part virtually from China and Taiwan.

  1. At its current death rate, if 2/3 of the world (5 billion out of 8 billion?) get the virus how many people will die world wide?

  2. There are a lot of directions things can go and a lot of directions they will go.
    I don’t think there will be any united one way forward.

  3. Same as the guy in a wheelchair. They could fix him… but they don’t care.

    Actually, he was probably deliberately crippled as a punishment. ST is explicitly stated to have stopped use of money and markets, and we know that you can only stop people trading with harsh punishment. Yet we never actually see this repression, at least not in a form we recognise.

  4. They had a lot of different exotic wild-caught animals at the market and they had raw meat at room temperature all intermingled.

    You don’t know what a wild animal has; there’s no quality control and you have all these animals in the same place.

    Bats have strong immune systems and live in giant colonies close to each other where they share food mouth-to-mouth, poop and pee all over the place; so they have a lot of nasty viruses. But those viruses rarely jump directly to humans; they need an intermediate host to adapt them to human physiology. SARS was civets. SARS-2 (the new name for 2019-ncov virus) we don’t know yet, but pangolins seem to be a strong candidate.

    A big part of the problem is that traditional chinese medicine drives demand for dried tiger penises, pangolin scales, shark fins, powdered rhino horns, all sorts of creepy stuff. The other part is poverty, which drives demand for wild animals for food. You know some contractor is clearing a site to build something and they happen to find some turtles or something; that’s free money.

Humans will either return to the Dark Ages in 200 years, or they will be unrecognizable by today’s standards: with 2X – 5X lifespans, gleeful bionic and labgrown new parts, enhanced brains and strength. Look to the Elephantmen series of graphic novels to see what recombo DNA will produce, including the super-physiques of “regular” men and women…and other people in between and “other.” Sci Fi shows get outdated very fast already. Star Trek is hopelessly retro now, especially the new series.

  6. Well in fairness to Star Trek Picard is bald because to paraphrase Gene Roddenberry’s response when he was asked about a bald captain “yes they are advanced enough to grow his hair but they are also advanced enough not to care”.

  7. There’s a background character in Star Trek Discovery in a wheelchair. Not even a futuristic wheelchair. Just regular. Hell we already have exoskeleton legs today. I guess all the socialism really screwed up healthcare in the future.

    Shoot, just having old people in futuristic shows is weird. Or anyone doing manual labor. But they don’t make these things for accuracy, or even to really think about the implications of new technologies, just to show us ourselves reflected back in different situations.

  8. The common cold…or many of them…are also corona viruses. Maybe we will get a cure for that while we are at it.
    I am always irritated by the far future sci-fi shows that say the common cold is still unsolved. Or future shows that say there are thousands to millions of diseases still to cure.
    Then there are all the bald and receding hairline people. Heck, we already have treatments that work to some degree. Granted it is not that easy to find all the actors you may need. Still, it is irritating.
