Alternatively, if the blood was currently at about 30% saturation, and it jumped to 90% saturation, then it would have jumped by 200% of the starting value.
Except that I think (not a medical doctor) that 30% would kill you stone dead.
This one never fell out of use, it’s taught to everyone who works in intensive care.
It is obviously a typo at some level but you could supersaturate oxygen in the blood compared to normal atmospheric O2 levels and this would validly be an O2 level > 100% (of normal).
A lot of things like that around: Long known medical techniques that just fell out of use for no good reason.

Just FYI, the prone (belly-down) position in order to increase oxygenation for patients under mechanical venitlation due to respiratory failure is nothing new, it’s been around since many years:

Personally i’m more concerned about what this virus will do to Iraq over the next two months but I understand that old folks have a tendency to get hung up on their pet issues.
