They also swapped Demerzel’s gender, emperor Cleon is eerily
called Brother Day, and Gaal Dornick looks like an Indian faggott,
while he should look like a 1940s Jewish postdoc.

It’s even worse than what you think. The stories that make the
original trilogy were written during the war (hence an A bomb
that can be fetched in mouth). The others are signed by Asimov
but probably written by others (Robert Silverberg?). All a
build up on a decrepit Roosevelt era success, written near
a kerosene stove, an oil lamp, a valve radio, and with Ford As
still roaming the streets (Gone with The Wind was a recent movie).
And now “Dad, that’s a bad copy of that old Star Wars movie!”
Apple getting their mitts on this… Why, God, why??? They’re just wrecking all the great franchises. I’d love to see it but I don’t want to be pandered to, it just raises my blood pressure. Hearing Denis Villeneuve gender-swapped Liet-Kynes for Dune, another jab straight at the heart. Jared Harris too, jeez… Can’t they just stay true to the source material?

I loved the original Foundation books in college. I read the entire series in a weekend.
Yeah, it was very good, entertaining storytelling and I enjoyed it a lot.
In the same way the One Ring, wizards and dark lords are good plot devices in LOTR, but they make the books into pure fantasy nonetheless. I’m fine with LOTR being fantasy, but in the case of Foundation series it feels like a tarnish in an otherwise pretty good secular future epic series.
Yeah, it’s the same for hyperdrives, sentient robots and galactic empires as of now, but the difference of science fiction and fantasy is that one is supposedly based on presumed or as of yet undiscovered scientific/technological advances, while the other is based on well, fantasy or things that could never happen.
Fantasy happening in virtual reality crosses the line, because virtual reality can be anything the creators want.
In the case of the Foundation series, in the end it feels to me like a renunciation to extrapolate the scientific and technical development of humanity on the far future, in exchange for mysticism and feel good mumbo jumbo.
That’s unavoidable. Science fiction always tells more about the fears, dreams and obsessions of the times it was made than those of the times it is supposed to happen.
That may be true but an Engineer will design a baseball bat and a Machinist will create it and a Patriot will use it … to make you see Reason™. God Bless ‘Murica!

I actually emailed Goyer a year or two ago about “if you do go back and redo I Robot, and Caves of Steel, don’t do the A.I. brain boost thing. It just leads to to many contradictions.”

I can already foresee (and I don´t need psychohistory) a future porn movie where the main character will be the Mule. And his “biggest” power will not be his telepathic ability to modify the emotions of human beings…

Telepathy and mind control were always the weakest parts of the books, but required for variety’s and drama’s sake.
Mentalics could have been changed by nanotech and technological subversion of minds, had they existed as concepts in the time these novels were written.
I imagine Gaia as a full blown Conjoiners utopia as per Alastair Reynold’s “Revelation Space”.
But it would be hard to justify why the rest of the Galaxy didn’t have such technology, maybe it could have been expunged from Galactic Culture by the first faction to achieve it?

Part of the Casting has Eto Demerzil; so, I’m kind of excited. I personally don’t like the whole mule thing; but, I see how that transfers to the screen kind of well. To me, the mule is just a literary ploy to keep the story going; otherwise, science would have won early. Just like Bill Joy’s freak out, and the Unabombers, that science victory is inevitable.
Well, I’m certainly looking forward to it. We can only hope it will be decent.
Well, they have a lot of books to make stories with. They obviously will start at the times of Hari Seldon, but there is a lot of historical context they can use.
Since the events placed in the near future like “I, Robot” and “The Naked Sun”, going to those farther away of “Caves of Steel” and “Robots and Empire”, then to the human diaspora and the Galactic Empire, the 1st and 2nd Foundation, the arrival of the Mule and up to the meeting of the 2nd Foundation with Gaia.
I’m optimistic about this. TV sci/fi has advanced significantly as well. The Expanse was an example of books translated well into TV series.; I’m hoping nothing less for Asimov’s Foundation books.
