Scientific Progress to Touchable Holograms and Real Holodecks

H-Reality is a team creating touchable holograms. This will be the next generation of haptic controllers for Virtual, Augmented and Mixed Reality. They are commercial leaders in ultrasonic non-contact haptics, state-of-the-art vibrotactile actuators, novel mathematical and tribological modeling of the skin and mechanics of touch, and experts in the psychophysical rendering of sensation.

Early applications will be improved remote operation of dangerous machinery and improved training of surgeons and better remove surgery.

Researchers have identified a universal scaling law for the depth of touch receptors across multiple species. This provides insights into understanding touch and evolution of the sensation of vibrations. This detailed understanding of touch will enable superior and more realistic stimulation of the skin layers for mimick the object that is would be touched in the virtual or augmented reality situation.

All mammalian skin is a layered, inhomogeneous viscoelastic solid. The top of skin is the outermost epidermis, then the dermis and then hypodermis, which have similar mechanical properties.

  1. uhum … they can do something about the taste and scent … I'm not convinced.

    In all seriousness, I think interacting directly with the brain is the real way to go.

  2. No Future. It'll be relegated to side show spectacle and academic grant 'sucking noises'. We as human beings are increasingly less interested in tactile reality, much less tactile illusion. More likely a Google Maps Street View 'visual' version of being an infinitely agile drone – zooming through all levels and resolutions of Reality -or- the video game/ scifi novel/ historically-compelling documentary as 'fly on the wall'. Witness the unceremonious demise of other motion-based, smell/touch interactive gaming controllers (remote medical advances will be more about 'star trek bridge layout' with you being in captain's chair orchestrating a series of pre-perfected maneuvers through your various staff (anesthesiologist, nurse, etc )– rather than being a 'hands-on' multiple armed operator robot. That being said, being able to jack-in various other stimulus inputs into the brain to 'better' interpret/ analyze a scene – say a lush, fragrant grove with breezes, smells, sounds, and 'feeling' undercurrents — that can be transmitted in layers to the brain (or screen) — perhaps also adding other 'unfeelable' information layers such as UV, infrared, other free chemicals/ compounds, xray, etc. The point is your nose, fingers, and ears are blunt and low-throughput/ high-error sensors. Better can be done – directly into the grey matter.

  3. You surely know, but the remote surgery was the leader in this telebot field, not the follower. edit: in fact, it started as miniaturization, which required computer controls, then they realized the surgeon did not have to be next to the computer, and the internet got fast enuf.

  4. I think that was supposed to be "remote" surgery. But I suppose that is obvious. I usually here it termed "telesurgery". 
    My dad had a recycling business. He would say business was picking up.
