Nvidia Drive Uses 1000 Watts But Tesla HW3 FSD Chip Uses 36 Watts

In October 2017 Nvidia and partner development companies announced the Drive PX Pegasus system, based upon two Xavier CPU/GPU devices and two post-Volta (Turing) generation GPUs. The companies stated the third generation Drive PX system would be capable of Level 5 autonomous driving, with a total of 320 INT8 TOPS of AI computational power and a 500 Watts TDP.

Tesla is working on HW4.0 self-driving chip with semiconductor company TSMC with a timeline for mass production in Q4 2021. Tesla’s HW 3.0 chip was produced by Samsung. Tesla HW3.0 uses about 36 watts and has 72 TOPS.

  1. A 1000 W chip is a problem because its power demand is more than 10% of the power an EV uses for urban driving.
