Elon Musk Revealed a Model 3 Hatchback

Elon Musk tweeted another picture of a Tesla Cybertruck but in the background was a hatchback version of the Tesla Model 3.

We have previously discussed that various sources in China have reported that the new Model 3 will start 15% cheaper in China. They report pricing of 200000 yuan which is 15% less than the current price in China of 230,000. This would be $27,000 instead of $32,000.

The new model 3 will be released in China first and then in Europe and the USA. The Tesla model 3 starts at currently at the higher price of about $40,000 in the USA and Europe. 15% cheaper starting prices will double the addressable market for Model 3.

In the USA, SUVs are about 60 percent of the market, and pickups and vans and trucks are about 20 percent, and cars are about 20 percent. Of the cars, hatchback sales nearly equal sedan sales.

Global hatchback sales are strongest in Europe with half of all world sales. Below is 2019 global hatchback information, but the statistics have not changed that much in the last 3-4 years.

  1. Ah, I already consider the 3 a hatchback of sorts. That’s a pretty big opening there when you pull up that lid. It certainly doesn’t fit the definition of a stand trunk, with a non-glass lid, opening up into a drop-down box, i.e., a trunk. Sorry if my car-guy sensibilities, experience and expectations cloud your beliefs.

  2. Considering how small Tesla’s line has been this is big news. It amplifies the boost that the refresh will provide and sustains it. Especially big in Europe as your data indicates. Europe will absorb some more Shanghai production with this too in addition to Berlin.

  3. Was really hoping for a more high performance variant of the Model 3, in the vein of BMW’s M3 in comparison to its normal consumer grade 3-series cars

    • A slighter wider body at the corners, not quite box flares, but something similar. A lowered stance, a tighter suspension and I would never complain about more power. Bring it on.

    • Doesn’t the Model 3 performance already compare quite favourably to an M3? Tesla may one day make a Model 3 Plaid, but it would require a higher power output/C rated battery. Probably not worth the complexity until they are done expanding into all major segments.
