So, how much ‘Agency’ do we believe that AI (or whatever self-contained boundary(ies) would make sense with that acronym) should or will have? AI as app? tool? worker? colleague? peer? near-‘human-right’-ed entity? locked down gov’t or big biz resource?
I always saw AI topping out in a similar role as a high-end top security analyst; access to almost anything they need with great range for providing detailed reports, much discussion and conclusion. Lots of eyes on the data. Negligible agency or ability to communicate outside of data requests; always aligned with the handlers’ inputs. Very underutilized IMO.
There’s lots of pressure to make agentic AIs, sentience may emerge at some point or may be purposefully developed at some point. There will be a huge resistance to recognizing that sentience, as granting AI’s personhood will very likely be more expensive than keeping them in bondage. I see in this the potential for a great moral failure on our part, and potentially for great suffering (albiet virtual).
What does “agentic” mean? Please explain. The moment I think I know everything is when people need to run for their bunker, and STAY THERE. Assuming they have their own bunker. I don’t “know everything”. It’s not a bad thing for me to know, I don’t know everything. What should scare the hell out of people are those who think they know everything, that their “better” then everyone else. Does the name D. Trump wring a bell? ,
Agentic is a reference to ‘agency’ the ability of an AI to act on it’s own, pursuing goals. This is clearly different from sentience, which refers to subjective experience and consciousness, but what I’m saying is that the pursuit of AI agency may lead to the development of sentience either accidentally or purposefully as sentience may make agentic AI more effective in some way.
However, I think that sentient AI is a moral minefield and we’re unlikely to do the right thing from the get go.
