New Tesla Model Ys and Cybertrucks are now autonomously driving themselves about 2 miles from the end of the production line at Giga Texas to their designated lanes near the outbound lot with no humans in the cars.
Tesla Fremont is making 1,603 cars per day and Austin 925 cars per day yield a total of approximately 2,528 cars per day.
The Fremont cars are each driving about 1.2 miles without human drivers.
The Austin cars are driving about 2 miles each without human drivers.
This is about 4000 miles per day of driving without human drivers.
Tesla also allows those with FSD to summon cars up to 85 meters without human drivers from their parking space. FSD owners can dispatch cars to parking spaces.
Tesla is likely at 150,000 to 200,000 miles per month of cars driving without human drivers.
When Tesla China and Berlin starts this could double the miles of driving without humans.

Am I the only one who sees this as a bit fat nothing? How is this an achievement? It’s such a controlled and closed course that the DARPA challengers from two decades ago could have done this with one of the sensors missing.
If adding closed course miles like this achieves anything, please let me know how. Surely what they need now are edge cases.

Agreed – though, I don’t believe that L4 and L5 will ever dominate and be widespread across all terrains, climates, densities, and cultures; there is likely oportunity to get past whatever multiples of XXtimes Human Safe to become actually useful to the flow and quality of ‘traffic’ by creating auto systems that are actually strategic and intuitive, like an experienced driver – when sometimes you need to be a bit aggressive and domineering, -and- sometimes read the road and be ‘gramma safe’. For me, these closed courses would be good if they could create ‘apocalyptic’ conditions – brutal road surface/ conditions with epic weather plus aggressive and ruthless co-drivers/ pedstrians all during rush-hours and ‘last-call’ hours. Personally, i see the future of auto driving as a relationhsip between car companies and municipalities to share road data and create interstate/ main boulevard zones with driverless priority and possibly autobahn near-limitless speed zones. It could even be a subscription to enhance the commute. Anyway, some kind of industry-wide strategy needs to happen.
