Sonny White updates his work on using nanoscale fabrication to harness the Casimir effect. He has a company, Casimir space, working to commercialize it.
The Casimir force in quantum mechanics has empty space (the quantum vacuum) is filled with fluctuating fields, virtual particles, and energy wavelengths. When two metal plates are placed very close (e.g., 100 nanometers apart) in a vacuum, wavelengths larger than the gap are excluded between them, creating a negative pressure that pushes the plates together. This was theorized by Hendrik Casimir in 1948 and experimentally confirmed in 1996-1997.
White is making static nanostructures on silicon chips using standard semiconductor techniques. The cavity walls are fixed to the substrate and electrically connected, with antenna-like pillars in the gap’s center (which are also fixed). The quantum field interacts asymmetrically: it stimulates electrons in the walls to quantum tunnel to the pillars, but the pillars’ protected environment (like a calm lagoon amid ocean waves) reduces the return tunneling probability. This creates a preferential electron flow, generating continuous power when connected to a load (this is like a resistor or LED).
Prototype Chips are generating power and they are targeting 5mm x 5mm produce 1.5 volts and 25 microamps (picowatt to nanowatt range). This is demonstrated via capacitive discharges and steady-state currents in shielded enclosures. White draws parallels to solar panels (real photons vs. virtual photons from the vacuum).

They plan to make multilayer chips (which is already done for high bandwidth memory with 16 layers and soon 24 layers) and die stacking. This should increase power 100-150x while keeping thickness under 1 millimeter. Using several chips should yield 0.5-5 watts or more. They should mass produce and get economics improving from $500 immortal phone upgrades and then eventually to $50-100 per watt for broader applications. They leave the battery in the phone but have their chips constantly trickle charging.
Smartphones can efficiently use about 18 watt hours of battery for 33 hours of operation. A phone that would never need charging would need 1 watt of constant power and some could be made that would last on 0.5 watts of power.

White thinks low-power electronics like tire pressure monitors, glucose sensors, key fobs, Apple AirTags, IoT devices, photonic displays, and NFC cards could use his scaled casimir devices.
If the economics and scaling could be worked out this could enable trickle-charging EVs (1kW bricks for 24kWh/day), off-grid homes, or remote cabins. White emphasizes economics (dollars per watt) and the exploding low-power market.
The discussion shifts to warp drives. White references Miguel Alcubierre’s 1994 metric, which requires “exotic matter” (negative energy density) to warp spacetime for faster-than-light travel without violating relativity locally. The Casimir effect provides such negative energy mathematically. White’s team, funded by DARPA for power extraction (not propulsion), accidentally found that their cavity designs (e.g., pillars or sphere-in-ring structures) produce energy density distributions matching Alcubierre’s requirements. A 2021 paper in the European Physical Journal C proposes building micron-scale metalized structures via 3D printing to test optical effects (e.g., photon path changes), potentially validating warp concepts experimentally.

A possible timeline for Casimir Force Energy Chips if they get good funding. They likely need at least a few tens of millions and then partnerships and more funding.
Short-Term (2025-2026):
Focus on prototype iteration. White mentions 2-week fabrication cycles for testing materials/morphologies.
Expect multilayer chips (100x power boost) and steady-state outputs reaching 100-500 microamps.
Early commercialization: Partnerships for low-power devices (e.g., IoT sensors, medical implants). Proof-of-concept demos, like powering AirTag-like trackers.
Funding via DARPA extensions or VCs; aim for “default alive” revenue from niche markets (e.g., space/military eternal batteries).
Medium-Term (2027-2028): Scaling via die stacking and aggregation.
Chips could hit 0.5-2 watts, enabling hybrid systems (e.g., immortal smartphones at $200-300 upcharge).
Broader testing: Radiation-hardened versions for space (e.g., ISS integration). Economics drop to $200-300/watt.
Publications on warp crossovers, potentially small-scale experiments (e.g., micron structures testing optical shifts).
Collaborations with semiconductor giants (e.g., TSMC) for mass production.
Longer-Term (2030+):
Kilowatt-scale bricks if multilayer yields 1000x gains.
Applications expand to EV trickle-charging, off-grid power (e.g., $50-100/watt).
If energy density reaches solar panel parity (but always-on), adoption in renewables/climate tech. Warp development: Lab tests of negative energy structures; if successful, DARPA/NASA funding for propulsion prototypes.
Challenges: Manufacturing yields (nanoscale precision), thermal management, and regulatory hurdles for “infinite” energy claims.
NOTE: There was some earlier work on casimir force chips.

I kept looking for where this was harvesting energy from motion or heat gradients until I realized it’s just another perpetual motion machine.
It’s cool we can solve the heat death of the universe and warp drives all in one go. Maybe have it open up the multiverse so we can get a little MCU action as well. Even better, pop open heaven with a “negative energy” gate and go have a talk with the creator…… Seriously Brian?
Think, we produce energy using turbines and we power aircrafts using turbines.
IIRC, M1-Abrams use a turbine to power the tank.
Come on. How many times does Sonny White need to come out with some outrageous physics-defying announcement before you start exhibiting at least a *little* critical perspective on these things?
Hmmm. these ‘Quantum Fluctuations’ in the Aether…. Heard some physics dude on Youtube discussing how they were responsible for quantum tunneling and the beta-decay spectrum (i.e. not neutrinos) – an energy input from nowhere instead of a phantom particle taking away energy. I fear the truth(s) will remain unknowable to our monkey meat brains – how will we ever gain perspective of things we cannot interact with (e.g. neutron stars)? We can’t! Instead, we’re stuck with speculation with the blessings of experts from world-renowned institutions – Feynman diagrams and such. My ex-wife insisted she had a mental picture of atoms being some vibrating entity that made sense to her. I never understood the need to have an explanation or visualization of such things – such ‘feelings’ are not particularly useful, especially when we can simply measure the things that matter (e.g. measuring neutron emission vs. “feeling the liquid drop model of fission”). I’m not saying it is pointless to talk about ‘Quantum Fluctuations’ or such things; it is mildly entertaining, but I can’t help but figure there is some gravitation or electrostatic or eddy current explanation for the Casimir force. Should be impossible to measure such miniscule forces on miniscule scales – so go ahead and attribute it to the ‘spontaneous virtual particles’ and metal plate bandgap filters in the Aether. It’s not like I’m able to peer review your conjecture.
Somebody didn’t properly internalize the laws of thermodynamics.
I will confidently state: It can’t work. No combination of conservative forces can add up to non-conservation. And every force involved here is conservative.
Indeed. The problem is that it sounds good enough to scientifically illiterate investors. I guess that if they started the presentation blasting “it’s a kind of magic” through the speakers then the funding rounds would be less effective
Every law of science MUST conform to Nature or Experiment or Experience.
We tested the Laws of Thermodynamics in many ways but not all possible ways.
We can, then, claim they hold in some specific conditions, not in ALL specific conditions.
Same for Thermodynamics. If you test it in large system, on a macro-scale, it hold.
You don’t know it hold at every scale and in every condition, in particular at nano-scale.
You believe it as a article of faith not as a scientific notion.
Nah, if I had to stake my immortal soul on it, I wouldn’t make the bet. If I had to stake $10K? In a heartbeat. It’s not an article of faith, just a really high level of confidence.
Sure, maybe there’s some ‘exploit’ that lets you build free energy machines. If there is, I’ll start believing that the universe is just a simulation.
Well one day maybe we get something working. The casimir force is real, we still dont know a bunch of physics, general relativity breaks down at micro and macro scale, spooky entaglement does exist and trusted, trained pilots report crafts flying with power outputs requiring nuclear power plants with no visible heat signature in a tictac. This indeed feels ecat but one day new physics will arrive. I do feel sympahatism for the quantum vacuum. And its people that will be stigmatized at first who pull it.
Not even a WEE bit of skepticism for what is essentially a perpetual motion machine? Its kind of funny how the same “pattern of Snake Oil” keeps getting packaged, and re-packaged over and over again.
[1] Make remarkable claim
[2] Back it up with physics that goes back to the Dawn of the Quantum age
[3] Describe a magic device.
[4] Immediately scale it to whatever size needed to be macro scale
[5] Then conjure all nature of uses … from cell phones to generators, space propulsion
[6] Etc, etc. Until there’s no chance you’d recognize the perpetual-motion biz.
ECats, BrilliantLight Power, all of ’em. Something from nothing. All of them requiring quantum magic, requiring the violation of the fundamentals of thermodynamics. Now its the Casimir force, yes? Yay! Before, it was dielectrics and piezoelectrics in steep magnetic field gradients. Wicked good words, ain’t they? Snake oil. With flies.
Just saying folks.
Yes, the continued push here on NBF of perpetual motion machines as ‘tech breakthrough’ is a disgrace. I am still waiting the report on the IVO satellite, that, surprise surprise, does not work (I wonder if it will count as correct prediction).
Oh, let’s not act surprised. Brian needs clicks. Perpetual motion gets clicks. It is ostensibly earnest reporting, in that Brian isn’t making this stuff up himself, but reporting it. I give our dear Leader a nice big pass on this. However, it is also just about the only thing that gets me to write now. Arthritis is really hard on typing.
Tell me about it. For me it’s peripheral neuropathy. (A gradual side effect of chemo years ago.) Try being a touch typist who can’t feel the keys…
You might try SAMe; It’s dramatically slowed the progress of my own arthritis. It does take a while to work, though.
Cool, Brett. Thanks.
I take niacinimide B3 100mg dosage sometime hourly for arthritis inflammation and pain reduction. I only need to take 2 to 3 times per day but a friend with more severe arthritis takes it 8 times per day.

Thanks, Brian.
The second Principle of Thermodynamics adopted as a religious tenet.
Homer Simpson would be proud.
In a way I applaud your plucky contrarianism, PL2K. You’re determined to carry the Bota Bag of Hope for someone, somewhere, sometime producing SOME measurable violation of the Conservation of Energy Law, which insofar I as am still aware, hasn’t really been violated. Because Free Energy would be a delightful breakthrough, wouldn’t it? Remove mankind’s enslavement to petroleum, hydropower, nuclear, solar, wind, geothermal, and even burning piles of forest products for energy generation. Who wouldn’t want that, right?
And yet it remains. 2025 … and there’ve been hundreds or perhaps thousands of claims of ‘over unity’ machines, of delightful quantum breakthroughs to separate Maxwell’s hot-and-cold molecules (Maxwell’s Demon), to harvest the energy which is entropically well-mixed and thus realize something-from-the mess in return.
Again … your plucky determination to keep the subject’s vitality alive is laudable.
The problem with Maxwell’s Demon is Maxwell imagined it to work on the molecular level, not at the electron level.
Did Maxwell know about Quantum Tunneling (like in transistors)?
Your objections remember me the objections raised by people claiming Ancient Egyptians were not technologically advanced enough to cut granite. Then a Russian Archaeologist put on Youtube videos about how to do it (and he show how it is done) with a wooden stick, some copper, quartz sand, and a rock as flywheel.
Your objections are sensible if we were talking about something at macro/micro level, but if you go down to the nano level or smaller, they stop working.
Would you be right in telling me an object heavier than air can not fly?
Yes. But airplanes exist.
Because your model of “heavier than air” didn’t take in consideration the possibility the air on top of the object move faster than the air on the bottom of the object. Wings are there to force air to move differently and produce a lift to the plane.
XIX Century GoatGuy would argue “air is air and don’t push up or down as you like”
It is strange that SLS, a brute force LV we know works, gets more hostility on the web than fanciful claims by a fraudster
–oh…I don’t believe Sonny either.
I wonder if he is not harvesting the electromagnetic noise like a crystal radio…
