SpaceX Starship V3 and V4 and Raptor V3 and V4

SpaceX Raptor 3 rocket engine had it first hot-fire in August 2024 and entered scaled production by early 2025. It has 280 tonnes-force (tf) sea-level thrust, 350-second specific impulse (Isp), and a dry mass under 1,525 kg. It has nearly double the thrust-to-weight of Raptor 2 at a fraction of the complexity (no external heat shields, integrated regenerative cooling for all exposed surfaces). The Super Heavy booster 33-engine cluster could hit ~9,000 tf total liftoff thrust, with marginal gains pushing toward 300 tf per engine in Raptor 3.x variants with optimized turbopump efficiencies and chamber pressure tweaks.

Starship and super heavy booster V4 is 2027. It will probably closer to 150m height and 7500 tons.

Raptor rocket engine V4 is another leap. The per-engine thrust will exceed 300 tf (thrust-to-mass >200). It will further streamline the hourglass architecture and have a minimalist inverted-cone design with fully internalized secondary flows and advanced regenerative cooling loops that eliminate residual fire suppression needs (saving another 5-10 tonnes vehicle mass). Isp gains to ~355 seconds SL and vacuum variants at 380 seconds with giant nozzles.

Projected Timeline for V4 raptor rocket engines

Development & Hot-Fire Testing: Q4 2025 to Q2 2026.
McGregor’s test cadence for Raptor 3 has already hit 10+ firings per week by August 2025
V4 prototypes will overlap, with first firings likely by year-end 2025 as 3.x iterations wrap.

Integration & Flight Qualification: Mid-2026 onward. Initial use on Starship V3.5 or V4 prototypes and a full fleet transition by late 2026 for operational Block 3 vehicles.

Full Production Scale will be in 2027. this could evolve to have more V4 engines. If there were 35-42 engine clusters on stretched boosters. The boosters will have 10,000-12,000 tf total thrust which will be three times Saturn V.

Starship and Super heavy V3 Development & First Flights for version 3 Starship and booster

Late 2025 to mid-2026. Production of V3 hardware is ramping now with suborbital quals in Q4 2025 and orbital debut in H1 2026. This could be 20+ flights/year.

200-Tonne payloads will be in Q3-Q4 2026. Initial tanker flights will validate the envelope. The full certification for 200-tonne manifests (Starlink V3 sats or lunar cargo) by the end of 2026.

V4 Booster Maturity will have over 250+ Tonnes of payload in reusable mode in 2027-2028. There will be 42 Raptor V4s and further stretched rocket. Payloads exceed 250 tonnes reusable should be ready for 2028 Mars windows.
