2026 is the year Tesla AI starts to get to significant scale for robotaxi, optimus teslabot and using XAI Grok 5+ for voice and other early AGI capabilities.

  1. I am all for not having to drive, but do not believe these taxis will be available in the next 5 years. They have been promised “next year” for nearly 10 years now and we are still hearing “next year”. I will start believing it, when large scale deployments begin.

  2. I agree with you, Brian. An entirely new market will open up when robotaxis/cybercabs become so easy to book and use – combined with lower costs than owning your own vehicle – that Tesla will start dominating the auto transport market from a minority position, similar to Apple dominating the cell phone market.

    Public transport and deliveries and elderly/disabled transport will all change.

    My question is how quickly will trust and behavior modification come? How quickly will Tesla overcome mental resistance from the general population? Charging infrastructure plus government regulation are the wildcards.

    I wonder how X.com – the everything app plus Grok – will smooth the transition with an incredibly frictionless payment system? Hit a button on your cell phone to input a destination, and a car arrives within 5 minutes and the payment is handled automatically. Mindless ease of use will be important for widespread adoption.

    I’m glad Waymo has been preparing the way…

    • I’m saying this as someone who lives in the U.S. and I know it’s not the same everywhere: As long as the option remains for the mass majority of the public to own personal vehicles outright that aren’t connected to a network that can shut them down remotely for arbitrary reasons, and that have range comparable to what currently exists so that we can continue to easily and freely travel between cities on the roads in our own vehicles on a whim, just get in our cars and go, things like FSD/robotaxi will be allowed to continue. The moment travel is restricted by whittling away the personal, non-networked car market, it will fall apart and wiol never be allowed again, which would be a good thing [in that scenario; obviously not all scenarios].

      We must never give up freedom of travel to a corporation or to governments. They can cry me a river.

      • Couldn’t disagree more. Cost is all that matters (assuming safety and convenience are generally on-par, which they will be). For better or worse, the freedoms you describe will in large part be forgotten within a generation. There is already a significant fraction of people, particularly in dense urban areas, who don’t bother ever learning to drive in the first place because it is not necessary and/or cost-effective. This fraction will only grow as autonomous transport options push costs lower.

        • I think the social pressure will even be in the opposite direction. Cities that ban human driven vehicles and require all vehicles be network controlled will experience too many advantages to ignore. No police chases. Lower crime. No drunk driving accidents, few accidents of any kind. Eventually every ride is direct to the destination like a police escorted motorcade, passing through every intersection without ever stopping. Business districts will get more dense and more walkable as space now allotted to parking gets built up and more streets become pedestrian malls. Real estate prices there go up.

          It won’t take too long before human driven vehicles are as unusual as horse carriages. There are still Amish communities and stables in the country. There will still be cars with steering wheels. But Auto will mean Autonomous.

          • The general issue is: autonomous driving is an effective business only in densely populated areas. But the same AI levels that will allow autonomous driving are the ones that compete with the need of clustering millions of people in cities: if AGI is developed you will not need thousands of office buildings downtown nor tens of thousands of housing blocks.

            Cities were built for administrative, market and production efficiency. If production and logistics are automated and you can work remotely you do not need cities

              • I agree. I just think that certain businesses models like autonomous taxis (or human drive taxis) rely on densely populated areas. If in the 1900 you built a business model based on tractors to farm hay for horses and did not see that combustion engines were going to replace horses you would have pursued a bad business. AI will reduce the need to live in cities. Robotaxis will not be viable on sparsely populated areas.
