  1. The car might be ready, but FSD is not. They are still using employees in the cars. I will not get excited until after I see their test cars going without employees in the car and not geo fenced on where they can go.

  2. Come on, I’m going to want at least a big red industrial E-stop button that I can slap if things get hairy.

  3. That’s the first time I’ve seen that view of the interior of a dedicated driverless car but it has a clean natural look that I can easily imagine being the the norm for vehicles. It would have briefly seemed odd to people for elevators to not have a station with an operator’s controls and a manual gate. Once they were just empty with panel of buttons though that would have seemed normal very quickly. (U)FSD is already paired with Grok for a completely fluent natural language interface. Passengers get in Robotaxi and talk to it in any language. It displays the route and other information on a big screen. They can interact with the app on their phone exactly the same way. I don’t think it will take too long before steering wheels and pedals in vehicles seem archaic.

  4. crazy seeing a vehicle with a big empty floor. Nice to see Tesla’s autonomous cars finally getting the training wheels taken off. Although I don’t think the camera’s are designed with road containments in mind. They should all have internal methods for cleaning the lenses. Not enough focus was spent on that. I realize snow is a rarity in Texas or Cali, but in a large swath of the US (& world) it is a very big deal. snow will block these, as will road salt. I guess they will find this out the hard way next year, when they deploy robotaxi vehicles in colder climates.

    • Not to mention regular cleaning of the INSIDE of the cab, which might need to happen after every ride potentially. But who would know if there’s no driver? And recharging? How’s that going to be done with no driver and no attendant at nearly all charge stations today? People somehow have missed that a public charge station lacks a lot of the features of a gas station, like personnel and even a convenience store, and replaced with what…dwell time? Lines for the high speed charger? Who’s going to ensure a driverless cab’s place in line for that?
      And what about liability insurance to autonomous cabs? Until insurance companies start charging less for autonomous cars than for driver cars, no one can honestly say they are safer. There are so many versions of autonomous software that no clear safety profile can even be demonstrated. Many people think Tesla is covering up their true autonomous record. Cybercab may be the first real test. Would you want to be part of that experiment? I wouldn’t…
      So many unanswered questions.

      • Tesla has shown robotic cleaning stations in development but all that’s needed really is a local contract at a car wash. Tesla long ago showed an inductive charging pad, but every locality they expand to can easily find short term work arounds. Why would passenger amenities at charging stations be relevant to a robotaxi? Nobody ever needs to be waiting at one. Once (u) FSD is out to Tesla owners, their cars will go charge by themselves and Robotaxis are going to charge almost exclusively in off hours with little competition – because they can be scheduled that way. Tesla will self insure for liability, collision, etc, insurance costs will be part of the cost of unsupervised FSD. I don’t think there are many unanswered questions at this point. I’d be happy to be part of the experiment.

      • Presumably they have a camera inside the cabin? That can be used to judge if cleaning is needed or not? And it is well known – I’m surprised you have not done a rudimentary googling – that robottaxis are charged wirelessly at 22kW power. So the SW knows when the taxi needs charging, drives to a charging spot, charging starts and when it is finished it resumes taxi duty. Easy peasy.
