US secretary of state Marco Rubio is expected to prepare a proposal to buy Greenland for $700 billion, NBC reports. January 14, 2026 Meeting, Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen and Greenland’s Foreign Minister Vivian Motzfeldt at the White House. No deal was reached, with Denmark and Greenland reiterating that Greenland is not for sale. However, they agreed to establish a high-level working group for technical talks to address US security concerns (e.g., military presence) while respecting Denmark’s “red lines.” The group is expected to meet first in weeks, with ongoing discussions every 2-3 weeks.

$700 Billion Offer Estimate is not an official bid but a planning figure calculated by scholars and former US officials, potentially ranging $600-900B (more than half the Pentagon’s annual budget). It factors in land value ($200-220B), resources, infrastructure, and compensation.

The figure could plausibly move closer to $900 billion for Denmark. Norway’s sovereign wealth fund, widely regarded as the global benchmark, stands at around $1.8 trillion. A $900 billion transaction would place Denmark’s wealth overnight at roughly half the scale of Norway, one of the richest countries on earth. Over the past 10 years, the Norwegian wealth fund delivered an average annual return of 7.25 percent. Applied to $900 billion, that equates to $65 billion per year in returns, or about €56 billion. Denmark’s total annual state budget is roughly $140 billion, or €124 billion. Investment income alone would therefore cover close to half of Denmark’s entire annual budget every single year, in perpetuity, without touching the principal.

That kind of recurring income changes everything. Taxes could be cut dramatically, turbocharging growth and turning Denmark into one of the most competitive economies in Europe.

      But, only 50% +1 of Greenlanders need to vote “yes” to join — in exchange for one million dollars per person.

      Closely followed by season one of “The Real Housewives of Ittoqqortoormiit”.

      And, even if you’re on the losing side of the vote, you get a million dollars while keeping everything you had before.

      Not everybody needs to vote yes.

      Just bodies enough.

      • 1M USD each is not much money when compared to the standard benefits you get in Denmark and most of the EU countries

        -Full healthcare coverage (better than USA as denmark life expectancy is 82 years vs 79 years in usa, so is 4% better and is free)
        -Full education coverage (and danish students are normally admitted at postgraduate level in us universities so their tuition-free education is nonetheless very competitive)
        -1 year full paid maternity leave per child and the guarantee that you cannot be fired and you will get back your work once done (more or less the standard in every EU country)
        -25 days of paid holidays per year
        -subsidized childcare where parents pay a maximum of 25% of the cost
        -better respect for the rule of the Law (for example you have mandatory investingation if someone gets s*ot by a police agent, to assess responsibilities.

        And so on…

  2. Denmark’s red line is selling Greenland, and this is sheer lunacy. The United States has broad basing rights already. Denmark will not willingly sell it without coercion. The only thing forcing this to happen achieves is the likely destruction of NATO.

    And today’s headlines are even dumber– now we’re taxing ourselves via tariffs because other NATO allies dare to express a negative opinion of this thuggery.

    I have to assume this suggestion is coming from Vladimir Putin.

  3. Apparently the Greenlandic language and Inuktitut, the language spoken by the natives of the Nunavut territory of Canada are mutually intelligible. That would be a reason for Greenland to prefer a closer relationship with Canada (if probably not joining Canada) to any connection to the US.

  6. I don’t think we should be making major purchases on this scale when deep in debt and running staggering deficits. We don’t actually NEED Greenland, we already have a comprehensive set of natural resources, we just need to clear away the obstacles that were erected to keep us from using them.

    However, it’s been clear all along that it would probably be relatively cheap to just outright buy the consent of Greenlanders, given how few of them there are, and that Denmark has already committed to letting them decide their own fate.

    • I believe we will need that strategic position in the very near future. And it becomes very difficult to build there without sovereign authority. My children and grandchildren will need protection from hypersonic cruise missiles and Poseidon torpedoes (and the like). Not early warning radars, but interceptors on underground rail systems, megawatt lasers, and drone submarine bases with nuclear power plants. And we want minimal oversight. We can try to do these things closer to home, but that is not optimal. IMO

    Didn’t we just open up oil production in Venezuela or did that already fail before it began🤷‍♂️

  8. That number is just some analyst’s arbitrary guess about economic value. It has nothing to do with any negotiation even in principle. The sovereign status of Greenland is up to its people as far as Denmark, the EU, NATO are concerned. Payments are irrelevant. If the 50k or so people of Greenland vote to be part of the U.S., Denmark won’t stand in the way. The U.S. paying a lump sum signing bonus of $1M to every man woman and child in Greenland if they vote for joining the U.S. so $4M to a couple with 2 kids, would cost about $50B. THAT would be a much more relevant number. The value of minerals on the territory is legally and practically irrelevant.
