As somebody once said, the stock market and the economy are not the same thing. There are lots of people in the lower income tiers of the economy that are really suffering a lot now and if the AI boom continues it will mean the loss of many millions of good paying white collar jobs with little prospect for those people losing their jobs replacing them with anything at all close to them.
Unfortunately, TPTB care more for keeping the stock market up than for the condition of labor or people; witness how Trump starts to panic when the market tanks, which it probably will again Monday due to the war he started. The term TACO – Trump Always Chickens Out – mainly refers to Trump’s reaction to the markets going down and his policies on tariffs and now, the war too (basically WWIII, centered on Ukraine-Russia and Iran-Israel with America and Russia & China treating the gulf states as proxies). The war is expanding anyway.
Justice, fairness, and even efficiency have little to do with economic management or mismanagement. An ordinary individual without Inside Information has little choice but to hitch his/her wagon to the preferred market engine in order to outpace inflation, which is higher than the manipulated CPI for the goods most people need to live (food, water, clothing and shelter remain the essentials, and the declining price of TVs and Computer improvements don’t offset that and are one-offs anyway vs. constants).
This is especially true if AI is going to displace workers, even though it’s a bubble using any kind of realistic revenue vs. CapEx projection.
What a pickle…
