XAI and Cursor Strategy to Catch Up and Beat Anthropic in Coding

Cursor is training its own Opus-class model from scratch. They are no longer fine-tuned on open-source model like Kimi K2. This is a major step up in capability and independence. They are using the 10-20X compute provided by xAI and Colossus 2.

In a few weeks the 1.5 trillion parameter coding model and harness. Then in a month or two 6T and 10T parameter models.

Composer 2.5 is already competitive with top models (Opus 4.7 / GPT-5.5 level) but is cheaper and more efficient. It was built on a China’s open-source Kimi K2 and improved with heavy reinforcement learning (RL).

They used innovative RL technique. There was targeted textual feedback instead of noisy full-rollout rewards. They insert specific hints at problem points in long agent trajectories for precise credit assignment.

The new product, Origin, a Git platform built from the ground up for AI agents. It is a GitHub alternative that handles thousands of agents, auto-resolves conflicts.

IF Origin is widely adopted this will give XAI and Cursor more of the highly important coding and developer interaction data.

Cursor + xAI compute + real-world user data could potentially result in dominance in coding/agentic AI by end of 2026.

Composer 2.5 was recently rolled out. It has big gains in long-running agent tasks, instruction following, and collaboration style. Uses targeted textual feedback in RL + 25× more synthetic tasks. It is priced very competitively ($0.50–$2.50 per million tokens, fast tier even cheaper). Double usage for the first week.

New from-scratch model was announced by CEO Michael Truell. Opus-class scale, trained with 10–20× more compute than previous models. Backed by the SpaceX partnership. Expected major leap. Release targeted for the next couple of weeks.

Origin was announced at Compile 26. A Git forge for the agentic era. Code hosting/review/collaboration platform designed for humans + thousands of AI agents. Git-compatible, extensible via APIs, smarter at merge conflicts/CI/agent workflows. Rolling out fall 2026 (waitlist open at cursor.com/origin).

Cursor Mobile (beta) is On-the-go agent management.
