Top Gear claimed to have drag race times comparing a Porsche Taycan Turbo S versus a Tesla Model S. However, the times for the Model S appear to be from 2017 data.
Elon Musk says that the DragTimes analysis is correct regarding Top Gear race. Elon Musk indicates an upcoming software update will give Model S an additional 50hp and this should beat the Porsche Taycan Turbo S both in 0-60 mph and quarter mile. This would be an increase of nearly 10% in peak power capability.

Sometimes things are farther away than they look in Muskland, that would be one good reason. 😉
Silly, silly, silly… The engineers at Tesla designed the power system to have certain characteristics for sound engineering reasons and when they make a change like this it likely involves a compromise of some kind. If I was a Tesla owner I’d be appalled with this.
Why would anyone look at Porsche when Tesla Plaid with 3 motors and about 900 HP is just around the corner and still at about 60-70% cheaper?
I read on the specs 2.5 with overboost, so yeah, there is a spec sheet and then reality. Yes, I called a dealer and the OTA is in the works, but curiously he said they have some other tech they are considering, wouldn’t say. Anyway, finally there is an alternative to Tesla, which is the whole idea with the Taycan. I’m not ready to trade in my S yet, but next time I’m in Germany I’ll go have a test drive. Very nice lines, and I have a slight soft spot for Porsche (once owned a used 911 CS from ’77). But I never buy a car in it’s first year of production, not even a Porsche. Better wait a bit.
Porsche can not do 0-60 in 2.3s it does it in 2.6. Only Tesla does 2.3s even recorded 2.27 sec. Porsche does not have true OTA like Tesla, Porsche can only update its infotainment system but not the performance.
Well there is a reason why Tesla didn’t give you the extra 50hp when you bought the car.
Why would they need to? Porsche does have OTA capabilities. For $175k+, going 0-60 in 2.3s doesn’t matter if you can do it in 2.1. I love my Model S, but I will definitely have a look at the Taycan next year.
I don’t think Porsche would do over the air updates. But I am nearly certain that the engine management system could be reprogrammed to optimise drag performance. Though I don’t know if that hadn’t already be done to achieve the numbers quoted by Top Gear.
Fifty horsepower from a software update. Beats the old days. To get that kind of power, I had to tweak the fuel system, work the head with a good porting, install larger valves and throw in higher lift and duration cams, not to mention going to higher compression pistons. These modern hot rodder kids have it so easy.
Can Porsche increase power via over the air update? I think not.
I assume this is yet another extension of their launch profile, which you have to unlock by acknowledging that it would damage your power systems/battery by reducing cycle life.
