Tesla China Has Made Big Factory and Research Gains

Tesla China VP Tao Lin’s revealed the following:

1) Many of the improvements to the upgraded Model 3 come from the R&D Center in China.

2) For example, ventilation sheets, new interior materials, quietness and ambient light were developed by the Shanghai R&D Innovation Center.

3) Tesla established the Gigafactory Data Center to achieve localization of data storage.
– All in-vehicle generated data sold in China will be stored in China.

4) Currently, a car can come off the production line in about 30 seconds.

5) Automation in the welding workshop is now close to 100%.

6) GigaCasting reduces manufacturing time from 1-2 hours to 3-5 minutes.

  1. “ventilation sheets, new interior materials, quietness and ambient light’

Hardly anything too ground breaking there, with some of it being a head scratcher. What exactly did they accomplish with ‘ambient light’?

  2. Of course, a Western country having a branch in China, investing there, and advancing tech there, is like a Allied country doing the same in Nazi Germany just before WWII. Never forget that we’re dealing with a genocidal totalitarian state here. Anything we do to increase their capabilities will come back to bite us in the end.

    Seriously, never forget that context.

    • 1) wayyy to late to worry about that. Chinese scientists and engineers are among the best in the world
      2) China consistently avoids and condemns violent conflicts with other countries. They want to be peaceful economic competitors, not violent dominators.
      3) When is the last time you visited a reservation or prison in the US? Ongoing federal policies such as requiring approval from the BIA for even minor investments prevents Indian development. Our prisons disproportionately store minorities. These systems are different from China’s approach to minorities, but not drastically so.

    • By ‘genocide’ I presume you are referring to China’s response to the Uyghur separatists killing 31 people in Kunming, also called China’s 911 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2014_Kunming_attack
The ‘genocide’ was classified genocide by the forcing of reversible birth control, China did not intentionally kill any Uyghurs.
Now compare China’s 911 response to Israel’s 911 response, it actually seems level headed and restrained in comparison.
